Computer Sound Stopped Working
Computer Sound Stopped Working
First, as I start all my computer threads, I pretty much know nothing about computers.
A few months ago my AVG and Malwarebytes were doing their routine sweeps and picked up some spyware and apparently a virus. Nothing seemed to be wrong with my computer but after everything was cleaned up the sound stopped working.
I've noticed that when I turn the volume all the way up I get a little noise from the speakers but when I try to play anything - youtube, mp3, dvd, etc., I hear nothing.
What is odd is that when the computer makes a weird error - like when I hit three keys at once or something, I hear a beep. I went into windows sounds and tried the default sounds but I get nothing.
Just so no one thinks I'm a total moron - the volume is not on mute, I've tried to reinstall the sound drivers from Toshiba but the computer won't let me remove the old one.
So, any suggestions? I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro U200 with Windows XP.
Thanks

Make sure you have "both" volumes turned up. There's the master volume - the one when you single-click the speaker icon, but there is also the Wave volume, which you can get to by double-clicking the speaker icon.
^ - Oh yeah, that is the other thing, the speaker icon on the bottom right no longer is there. I tried to put it back on the toolbar thing or whatever it is called but the computer told me I had to do it some other way - I've forgotten now how it said to do that
Ok so I opened up the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties thing and went to Audio (the volume tab is turned up) and the default device is listed as SoundMax HD Audio. I click on the volume button and it says nothing is installed.
Could that be the problem?

I think you have a problem with your speakers or the wire connecting to the speakers. the beeps you heard before probably came from the internal speaker inside your PC. Do you have the speakers plugged into the right hole? It should be the green one. If you want try plugging in another set of speakers or even headphones to see if you get sound.

I'm on a laptop. I've tried using headphones to get sound and I get nothing.
Apparently I'm missing a sndvol32.exe so I'm going to try and find out how I can reload that and see if that solves the problem

I found the sndvol32 exe - which controls the master and wave volume. And it is fixed.
Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.
Start > System > Hardware > Device Manager> look and see if there is any ! or ? by Sound, video and game controllers. If there is, uninstall what has an error and restart your computer. You can try to update sound drivers also.
*Ok, didn't see you already fixed it, but usually you can delet the sound driver and it will install a new one and everything will work.
