Cell Question
Yes in another phone that takes SIM cards. Phone may be branded to same service you use ie AT&T or T-Mobil. You can also unlock the phone or purchase on internet unlocked.
Need more info, ask more questions.

If you don't need to leave T-mobile but have a problem with the current phone, you can just buy a pre-paid phone from T-mobile and pop in your sim card rather than paying more for a replacement phone for the plan.

Yes you can. We had AT&T and when they went out we got switched to suncom (small local service). Did not like them so me and my mom switched over to cingular (now AT&T again). Later we decided my sister needed a phone so instead of getting her a plan we just got her a sim card and put it into my moms old phone. It works fine and we where able to avoid signing up for a contract. At least try it before you waste your money.

As I understand it, T-Mobile is either leasing or using part of AT&T/Cingular's GSM network, so unlocking one phone for use on the other network should be relatively simple.
However, I don't think that unlocking will permit a GSM phone to work with Verizon, Sprint, etc- CDMA or other non-GSM networks.
If you are up to the challange, depending on brand, you may be able to unlock it yourself. Do an internet search for sites that give you unlock codes.
As stated above you can also buy a T-Mo prepaid and swap in your card. Last, you can buy unlocked phones on the net. Any quad band GSM phone will work. If it's less than a quad band you must make sure it gets the correct frequencies.
