Can't Connect to Internet

My roommate and I don't use the internet much so we don't have a network set up for our place. Whenever we do need to use the internet we just connect to a neighbor's unsecured network. We have done this before on many occasions without any problems. Then all of a sudden, I wasn't able to connect to the network while my roommate can still connect with no problems. I am trying to figure out what is wrong my laptop but haven't found any solutions. Could anyone help me? Is it a firewall issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. THanks

Neighbor got wise and blocked your MAC address. Your roomie is next.

When the Bureau knocks, just open the door and make it easy on yourself.

So how can you be posting here in the interweb if you can't connect??

And your solution is to pay $15 a month or go to the local library, college or gov't center to access the wireless.

All I asked was whether or not this problem is due to my computer or the owner of the network?

Why don't you call your neighbor and have him troubleshoot his router?

It's a lot easier to troubleshoot if it's the same person's laptop and router.

Go to an open unsecured network to test the laptop- if OP can hook up, it's the neighbor's router/settings and not the laptop. If OP can't hook up at an open network, it's the laptop.

So, let's see if we have this straight: You admit to stealing someone else's Internet service (BTW, theft of service is a crime), you suddenly can't do it anymore, and you're wondering what's wrong.

Uh-huh.

And before you counter with "we did this before without a problem:" Your neighbor leaving his service unprotected is not an open invitation for you or anyone else to use it. It's still theft.

log into his router and trouble shoot it. He most likely has a linksys or netgear with the default passwords.

Wait a second, OP has been here 8 years and only has 189 posts? Wow. Mega-lurker award.

Of course, it is tough to post on Azine with a spotty Internet connection...

It's not a crime if they're not restricting access to the network. That's like saying if I were to spray water out into the street and someone came and drank a bit from stream, that it's a crime and they're stealing my water.

It is a crime. Really. It's illegal. As in, against the law. Unlawful. Not legal.

Knock knock.

Who's there?

The police.

Why are you here?

You stole the Internet. Let us in.

Yea, im with him. It's just like if someone leaves the back door of their house open and you go in and steal all their porn. If they don't restrict access, it's fair game. hopefully it's not homemade porn

Just for the sake of getting the help you wanted, you should have at least lied about net jacking your neighbor. You could have said, "he lets us use it..."

Hmmm, new to me...I always thought it was hard coded....

Anyway, wouldn't help since the router only allows certain mac addresses, so you would need to know it...

Go to the neighbor's house and ask him?
