Can someone help me pick out a laptop...
A friend of mine wants a laptop... he knows nothing about computers, so I told him I'd pick one out for him. I was planning on getting a Dell...but I'm not too excited about the options for this price range. A 1.6 ghz celeron is the best I saw
I didn't look around too much, and I don't have any coupon codes. Thought maybe someone here could suggest something...
Nothing fancy, I'd like to stay under $1,000. Its mostly for his work (financial advisor) and watching DVD's once in a while.
Only requirements are widescreen, cd rw / dvd, and xp professional. Anyone want to chime in?
Thanks....

Your best bet is to hit up one of the deals websites, like bensbargains.net, spoofee.com, slickdeals.com.....
Dell is a good option because their stuff is pretty cheap. For under a grand, you can get a centrino system. The problem is if you want to get one asap, since these dell deals come every couple of weeks. If your friend can wait, then he'll benefit significantly from dell deals. Their best was 750 bucks off 1500.
Like I mentioned above, intel centrino is the system you want to get. Celeron processor, although capable of handling dvd playback, is not as powerful as the Pentium M processor.

I bought my Dell laptop with the $750 off $1500 coupon. A week or so later they were doing like $500 off $1500 - I'd say wait till you find a deal. Like mentioned above, Dell rocks b/c you can get their stuff for cheap. I bought my desktop Dell for $500 off $1500 and free 19" LCD.

ummm.... well I would have agreed with all you guys on waiting for dell deals.. but just like your friend, i've been waiting for that $750 off $1500 deal.. That was about 1.5months of waiting and i coudln't take it anymore. Plus initially I was looking for 700m but then realized 12" screen isn't big enough for me. Sooooo, I went out today and bought Sony VAIO FS630. Paid little over $1300 at compusa but there is $250 rebates so it would bring it down to approximate $1080 including tax and shipping. Same configuration with 700m would have costed me about $1150 including tax and shipping.
Advantage: no rebates to wait for.
Disadvantage: Cost little more, screen is def smaller. (sony has 15.4" widescreen, perfect for movies)
I haven' t had the chance to open up my system yet but I'm planning on doing that tomorrow. Deal ends it on 15th at compusa. I also checked bestbuy and circuity but compusa offers the best deal for now. It wouldn't hurt to have him checked. I know I'm gonna love it. you can't beat Sony vaio laptop for slightly over 1000 bucks.

i actually bought a laptop yesterday, or 970 after tax, but it has 200 bucks in rebates. the add said it was 699 but u're paying the tax on the 899 sale price before rebates. Its the HP ze2315 at office depot, it has a 1.8 ghz processor, 512 ddr dram, 60 gb hd, and a DVD burner built in, with wireless b/g also.... it's pretty good for the price, you might wanna check it out.... so after tax and everything u're paying ~780 for a pretty quick laptop with a DVD burner and built in wireless.... oh yea, it has a brightview monitor and that thing is bright as hell, and the speakers are altec lansings, when i watch movies on it, it's like whoa compared to my dell 600m....
A few years ago I would have said Toshiba, but not anymore. I have had two junked out in the last year. Thankfully I had the service plan so after the forth repair for each I just had them replaced. My uncle has been in the same boat with his Toshiba laptop.
So I ended up with a Gateway and so far so good.
Anyways just check a site like www.techbargains.com to see what the best deals are and to get the newest coupons.

pentimum M 4 processor 1.73Ghz at 533Mhz
512 MB ddr
80 GB
Shared video card
15.4" widescreen
What else... ummm can't think of anything... just look up Sony VAIO FS630
I wouldn't personally go with HP just b/c of their size and weight... I want to keep my laptop portable as possible and seems like type of speaker they put on HP it only adds more weight
