Buying a new laptop very soon..
And im stuck between a 15'' powerbook G4 w/the combo drive or a Dell inspiron XPS 2nd gen.
Who's got some opinions on either? The Dell's gonna be pretty expensive (right now at 2300~, but may go upto 2700) and the powerbook's going to be about 1900-2000~.
I'll probably be able to buy it before the end of August, but I dont want to make a bad decision.
Any and all comments are welcomed
Thanks guys/gals

You sir need to learn how to get a bargain, People got Full Loaded XPS2's for under 2 G's you can too, go to notebookforums.com.
I got my Inspiron 9300 fully loaded for $1800, its the same as the XPS2 just the XPS2 has a even Better graphics card which is way above current games, the screen and everything else is similar.

See there you go, and also theres many stackable coupons, go on that site, they are very helpful
theres a way to get it VERY VERY VERY CHeap, if you know someone in the navy
that 35% coupon is the best you're going to get on the xps2.
i just got a dell i6000 with the 750 of 1500 coupon they have a couple of weeks ago.
i like it. i upgraded from a g4 ibook. it all depends on what you're going to use it for. if its for games get the dell. graphics and everyday email/websurfing the pbook will probably be less headaches and be a nice toy to lug around.

anyway...
all it comes down to here is whether you plan to play games on your laptop or not. if youre going to play games on the laptop you should get the XPS. windows is simply a better platform for gaming.
i don't know many serious gamers who use laptops for it though.
otherwise, the powerbook is a better choice, IMO, for a mobile workstation.
for those of you comparing screen size, i don't think that should come into play here at all since he could just as easily get a 17" widescreen powerbook.

Guy next to me on my flight last night had one of those. That was probably the best looking piece of machinery I've ever seen. I want one next. Anyone wanna buy my 700m?

Another problem I run into is that while many kids' programs will run on a mac, many will not. I'm wondering if this is the trend of the new kids' software as it seems most of the stuff that is a few years old is mac compatible.
I like the iLife stuff but I am seeing its limitations and will soon need to step up to something better. Since there is good movie editing software for the PC the mac isn't required for that.
So in my humble life as a system admin/home user I haven't had to say to myself "shit, if I had a mac I could do that". I know there is some great graphics software for mac that can probably whip a PC but that's not my cup of tea.
With that said I do use my mac every day and I fire up my 6 year old PC to run the stuff that the mac won't.

Umm i just ordered an HP ZV6000
2ghz Amd Athlon 64 processor
1gb of ram
100 gb hd
128mb ATI RADEON
free built in wireless 56mbs b/g
15.4inch widecreen
HP 840 wireless printer
for 1,500 dollars excluding the two 50 dollar mail in rebates a pretty damn good deal. I asked the people at best buy and they recomended AMD athlon 64bit for gaming and pretty much everything and its a pretty good deal. Dell is good but way overpriced.

Looking for a deal on an Acer Travelmate 8103WLMi for the past few days this week.
Here are the specs:
8100 Datasheet
The most balanced laptop specs I've ever seen: powerful, gaming capable, thin lightweight and big screen, huge hard drive and dual layer multiformat dvd burner (superdrive), WITH DVI and SPDIF outputs!

The only thing that would have been better would be media center controls to play cd/mp3/dvds without booting up the OS and an optional remote. Easily a 10/10 laptop if that were the case, otherwise I'd call it easily a 9/10.
