If you have AMD don't forget to turn on Cool and Quiet software feature and go to control panel and set the power settings to minumum power managment so the processor drivers control that or you'll find out the hard way when you're running 42d idle and 50c full load hehe

AMD outperforms Intel in retail
or the first time in it's history, processor manufacturer AMD has outperformed rival Intel in the US retail market, according to market researchers Current Analysis.
The lead was not a great one, AMD sales accounted for 49.8% of sales in October 2005 whilst Intel sales made up 48.5%, but that is hardly likely to matter over at AMD headquarters. The point is that it is possible to beat Intel at their own game.
Although the figures only consider retail sales, and not sales from online retailers such as Dell, this is still a significant move forward for AMD. Intel have been relying on the power of their brand for some time now, whilst AMD have been moving forward with innovative ideas such as 64 bit consumer processors and dual core consumer processors. As well as that they can no longer be seen solely as the cheap alternative, many of AMD's top end processors are now considerably more pricey than their Intel counterparts.
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens over the next few months and to see if AMD can build on this success. We'll keep you posted whatever happens.

I decided to build my own pc last year. After tons of looking around and research I wound up building a system that is a near mirror of what tiguy99 has listed above. To say I've been extremely pleased with it since would be a distinct understatement.
I've never been fully happy with any of the intel machines I've built. I've also never been unhappy with any of the AMD machines I've built.
If the decision you posted were mine, I'd pick AMD in a heartbeat.

I used to troubleshoot & build computers for a semi-living back in high school and that was when everyone used to crap on AMD -- but on a budget, AMD was always the way to go back then.
Now, things have changed for AMD but only for the better. Anywhere in the spectrum of price ranges, AMD will trounce Intel's offering and numerous articles at almost every hardware review site attest to the same.

I am doing the same thing within next month or so.
I am looking at
Antec Solution SLK3800B Black Rackmount Case
And asus MB P5wlxxxx
and probably the 830 Intel Pentium D
video and other I am still not sure about.

Since we're all over computer parts, check out the case my buddy just got for the HTPC he's building. This thing looks cool as hell.

AMD athlon 64 is aboustely amazing for gaming the graphics and the speed are very good. However their hypertransport isnt as good as intel's hyper threading. But for performance the athlon is probally better since it can support 64bit apps.

Looks nice...but its LC16M is not compatible with GeForce 6800/7800 series and ATI X1800 series cards.... oh well there goes that especially if your a gamer.
I've had Intel all my life, but i think the next computer i get will have a AMD chip in it...

hypertransport is a data bus, sort of akin to the front side bus, hypertransport provides significantly more bandwith than the FSB that intel uses currently. this is a big reason amd opterons scale much better in multiprocessor systems than intel xeons do.
hyperthreading is having a 2nd virtual thread on a processor to keep the adverse affects of having a long pipeline to a minimum.
the two are completely unrelated. on a side note, amd processors would not benefit all that much from hyperthreading because they have a much shorter pipeline, while intel processors would greatly benefit for a bus technology like hypertransport.

You need to look at the latest CPU benchmarks. AMD > Intel.

AMD 64 X2 4400.
This is your best bang for the buck right now. It is also a stable overclocker. It can compare with the 4800 for about half the price.
I've done my reseach too and this is what I would build. BTW, I build about 3 systems a year.

if you can find one... the opteron 165 is a steal, 1.8ghz dual core with 1mb l2 cache per core, oc's to 2.4ghz easily which is what the 4800+ runs at. they cost ~$290 while the 4800+ is still in the $800+ range

what do you all think of this setup: http://www.smksuperstore.com/catalog/view.asp?ID=14312 ?
I currently have an ASUS p4s8x running a intel p4 2.0ghz w/ ATI aiw radeon 9800 pro 1.25gigs ddr ram, sound blaster audigy sound card.
my motherboard just got fried, and Iw ant to transfer everything over if I can. Only thing that concerns me is the power supply. Will I be able to use the same power supply for the AMD board that I used on my intel board, or will I need a new one?
