Best Hard Drive maker

Just like the thread says. I'm looking to build an external hard drive. I've heard Seagate is probably the best, but I wanted to see what you peeps thought.

Cool

I have found that they all make pretty good drives... although I have had fewer problems with Seagate...

For external drives I have heard good things about LaCie...

Best of luck..

Ciao

I've got a couple Seagates, never had any problems. Definitely the cheapest, you can get 180gb for $40 AR.

I've bought soooo many seagate drives and never had a problem with a single one.

I've bought:

7 Seagate hard drives - no problems at all. some are going on 3+ years now.
1 Hitachi Drive - Crashed and burned
1 Western digital - no prob so far
2 maxtor drives - both crashed and burned

I've seen them all die. Every brand. Buy whatever's fast and cheap. Then buy another to back your data up.

My vote will be lonely, but I vote Samsung sp120 series or sp80 series for general purpose applications. Cool, quiet, and reliable...but not the fastest.

If you want one of the fastest drives, I vote Seagate cheetah 15K.4. The price is absurd, but you’ll be hard-pressed at finding a better individual drive.

BTW @ the EMC comment; EMC doesn't make hard drives.

I know they don't make hard drives... But they offer highly praised NAS... Very reliable and performant...

Most people aren't tape library fans, but you should check out their CDL (clariion disk library). Very neat...I wasn't familiar with it up until a few months ago. It can emulate normal tape libraries, but the data is stored on disk for faster transfer.

I've had positive results with their NAS devices, but I don't have many others to comapare with.

Techbargains always has HD's on sale...cheap. Normal prices are about $100 for a 250-300 Gig.

I've had 3 Maxtors - no problems so far, one is 4 years old.

5 IBM drives, every last one failed.

Never had anything else.

Seagate hands down. Had a few maxtors fail on me. Now I sport a 100 GB 8 MB Buffer Momentus on my laptop and a 200 GB 8 MB Barracuda external...No problems thus far.
