Backup Software
Backup Software
OK, what are you guys using?
I want to back up certain folders to a raid 1 external drive. The drive said it came with s/w but the a$$holes didn't say it was a 30 trail.
I tried to search, I know it's been talk about just this year, but search won't pull up anything for me. It pulled up two old threads, but I can't get them back.

I've lost track of what's available for Windows machines since I moved my primary work to a Mac. From what I recall, most software intended for individual use on Windows machines is image-based and not really what you'd consider a traditional file-based backup software.
If you feel like putting a little bit of work into the initial setup, you can use the "Robocopy" tool from Microsoft which is available as part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit tools free download. It's a command line program but I seem to recall there having been GUI interfaces available for it. Of course if you have XP Pro or the Business or Ultimate editions of Vista, then you already have a perfectly capable piece of backup software.

Acronis True Image. Converted after using Ghost for years.

He wants to back up certain files and folder to an external drive, not an entire drive or partition. This is not what image-based software like True Image or GHOST are intended for. Those packages are primarily intended for disaster recovery which is a different task than routine data backup. You may be able use image-based programs to work with individual files and folders but it's likely going to be a PIA compared to just using a normal file/folder based backup program like ntbackup.exe that comes with XP Pro.
Been a Cobian fan for a long time, but I am looking for similar as they are now not supporting/updating and are looking to sell the source code, not responding in forums, etc..
I do a Friday full, compressed to 7zip (takes over 24 hours, hence on Fridays) and daily incrementals. I keep 2 fulls.
I wish Cobian would allow me to display a list of the files captured in the daily incrementals, but it does not. I would have to open the archive and run Karen's Directory Printer on it each day to see the files.
Anyone have any ideas for a slightly more powerful than home software backup solution?

I use Windows Home Server 2011 for my PC backups. It does incremental image backup of PCs and backup it's own files and settings to another hard drive. If you have any spare PCs lying around, I think it'll work on pretty much anything with a 64-bit CPU.
