AZ Geek Squad, need help!

I'm using a Brother MFC 8480 DN Printer/Scanner/Fax.

When I first purchased it I had an issue with the file size being too large when using Control Center 3, the software that came with the unit for scanning/faxing, etc.... I spent some time on the phone with a Brother technician and we did something that helped, I just forgot what it was.

I've been having som major issues with the USB connections and other issues with the printer, I ended up going the ethernet route so I don't have to deal with the USB problem anymore. In doing so, I ended up having to uninstall the software and reinstall it so the software would be set up properly for the network connection. I'm having the same file size problem again. Before the reinstall of the full suite software, I scanned earlier today 3 pages in .pdf format at 200dpi and in black and white, the file size is 115kb total. Not bad at all. Now when I scan, still through Control Center 3, still as a .pdf, still at 200 dpi, still in black and white, the same 3 pages scans in at almost 1MB. What did the technician instruct me to do that made the difference last time, and what do I have to do now to get the compression down without having to lower the resolution? I spent like an hour with them on the phone tonight just getting this stupid machine working right on my computers here at work, I don't have the head to go through it again! Please help!

Cliffs:
Brother printer file sizes are too large when scanning
A few months ago a technician guided me through some changes and got the compression down a LOT w/o having to lower the resolution of the scan
I had a problem with my computer and the machine today
I had to uninstall and reinstall the software
Now the file size is huge again when scanning
Help!

P.S. I called Paypal, they told me to call on AZ..

I can name my own price at the above site....

Did you download the latest software from Brother or you using the disk that came with it?

The only thing I can think of is the setting for the page size. What is set to?

Edit: Actually, I wonder if it has PDF creation settings AFTER the scan settings?

Which option are you using to create the PDF...ie. "scan to file", "scan to email", "scan to image"?

Scan to File is what i'm using. The page size is standard 8.5x11. There is no creation settings after the scan settings. I just called Brother but they were a waste of time. She can't comprehend that I was using the same computer, the same printer, the same settings yesterday and the file was compressed small, but now it's not. She's telling me to take it in to a service center to see if there's a problem with the driver, and if there isn't a problem with the driver they are going to have to charge me. wtf? She told me to use the Paperport software. It's not as slick as intuitive to use as Control Center 3. Granted I scanned 1 page on Paperport, as a pdf, black and white and 200 dpi and it scanned at 9kb. I took the same page and scanned it through CC3, it scanned at 191kb

Whiskers, do you think you can help?

I just scanned those same 3 pages on my assistants computer and it scanned at 122kb. I scanned it in mine and it's 1mb. Something's not right here. I'm going to uninstall it and reinstall one more time..

From page 52 of the manual...not sure you've checked this or not.

"If you want to change the default size for JPEG, PDF or Secure PDF, choose your preferred rate by moving the scroll bar on the Device Button tab of the ControlCenter3 configuration"

OK, I uninstalled and reinstalled w/o doing any updates and it's now scanning at a decent size. I scanned 1 page, it went in at 22kb. I scanned those 3 pages and it scanned at 122kb. MUCH better.

I guess I don't need you anymore Whiskers

Link?

Page 52 in my owner's manual doesn't say anything about that, it's talking about sending and receiving faxes..

It's only a function you can adjust if you're scanning to an e-mail. It's funny though, when I spoke to Brother earlier today the rep was saying that the scan to file function should have the ability to adjust the file size, but you can't. I've never clicked the "scan to e-mail" button, so I never knew that was even an option to do (to adjust the file size).

This is what I see when I go into the settings:
