Well, the X10 is barely going to get Android 2.1 and probably not gonna get any future updates after since 2.1 came out a while back now. The Captivate has a better GPU, comes with Android 2.1 and the screen is a lot better than the X10. Captivate should be getting an official Android 2.2 update any time now. Just a matter of AT&T pushing it out. XDA already has them available for download and they're pretty stable.

Also, now that the Nexus S is getting released which presumably has 90% the same hardware as the Captivate, Vibrant, Fascinate, Epic 4G, there's a good chance it'll get the Android 2.3 update that comes standard in the Nexus S. We'll find out soon enough in the next couple of days since the source just got released a few hours ago. The devs should be able to break it down and see what they'll be able port over even if Samsung decides to not update it. If you don't need the features found in Android 2.2 and above such as Adobe Flash Player, Chrome to Phone, and a few others then stick with the X10. If you want a phone that'll last you for the next few months, get the Captivate.

Lol. If you plan to get a new phone in the near future then the x10 should hold you for a while. I don't remember if Sony Ericsson finally hacked multitouch into the phone but I from what I recall the x10 doesn't have the ability to do it because it doesn't have the sensors for it. So no pinch to zoom. Not a big deal for most people. But yeah like you said its free. Can't complain about that.
