Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread

ehhh indeed. hey I do it too, for funny pics and such, and I have a separate folder for those called "random photos found on the interwebz" (or I will say that I didn't make it). it's not a BIG deal, but it's a nice courtesy - I try to find and credit the source either by sharing or linking to their site whenever possible I know most people don't care

this is kind of funny, the Android version of FB is still sub-par - and one of the reasons is because the developers do not want to give up iphones as their personal devices.

Facebook's iPhone App is New, Improved; Android, Not So Much
By Jared Newman, PCWorld Aug 24, 2012 9:07 AM
Facebook has completely rebuilt its iPhone app, making it much faster at loading status updates and scrolling through news feeds.
Android users, however, will have to wait for a better Facebook experience.
The key difference in the new Facebook iPhone app is that it's written in native code, rather than HTML5. Although HTML5 allowed Facebook to write its app once and ship it across multiple platforms, it also slowed the apps down, hence the notorious Facebook loading spinner.
The new app is much faster, even on my old iPhone 3GS. New status updates still take a few moments to load, but I've yet to experience any of the serious hang time that afflicted the old iPhone app.
The iPhone app's interface is mostly unchanged from previous versions, but a “new stories” notifier appears at the top of the news feed, which loads more updates when you tap on it. Photos can also be dismissed with a downward swipe.
I own a Galaxy S II in addition to the iPhone 3GS, so I compared the old HTML5 Android app to the new native iPhone app side by side. Status updates took much longer to load on the Android app, and photo viewing was unreliable, at times failing to load thumbnails or images. It's a reminder of how dismal the Facebook app has been on both platforms for the last few years, and how HTML5 just isn't good enough in its current state for mobile apps like Facebook.
When will Android users get a native app? Facebook isn't saying, and according to Business Insider, Android development has been somewhat of a struggle for the company. Unnamed sources said Facebook had to pressure employees to give up their iPhones for Android phones, just to make them suffer through Facebook's sub-par Android app as motivation.
In any case, a blog post about the new iPhone app from Facebook's Jonathan Dann bodes well for Android users: “The development of this new app signals a shift in how Facebook is building mobile products, with a focus on digging deep into individual platforms,” he writes. Seeing as Android is in the lead for smartphone market share, there's a good chance it's next in line for an overhaul.

zero crashes, running great.
also I read an article somewhere said that their main focus was to fix the speed issue, they didn't add any new features (such as share). some sense of consolation.
you can downswipe or upswipe on photos to close them now, it sure beats hitting the Done button

if i knew it was going to take this long for the new iPhone to come out, I would have bought the iPhone4s on its release date.
my iPhone4 (which I preordered and arrived on iPhone4 day) has gotten so sluggish...even after a clean restore. I tried deleting apps, pics, music, but after a week, it still get incredibly sluggish.
I think on iPhone5 day, I'm going to smash this iPhone4 with a hammer...

I played with iOS 6 on a friend's 4S over the weekend, the map mode is NICE - the fly around "3D" graphic mode works so well with pinching and twisting etc. I spent minutes just playing with that feature alone.

I'd be fine with the 4, but my failing home button is pissing me off.
Also the overall lagging as of the OS despite numerous restores and reboots.
I can only imagine how slow it will run on ios 6...

There have been numerous times in the passed 3 weeks I have wanted to throw my phone into a wall. Random slowness, apps shutting down.. Last week my phone died.. Plugged it in and it came up.. All my apps were not in the folders anymore. My emails, gone. My contacts, gone. Rebooted.. All were back.. That is when my phone met my dashboard and then my windshield..
Which brings me to my next issue.. G3/HTC One X+/iPhone 5.. I am so torn.
Part of me wants to kick this damn iPhone to the curb, but then the other part of me can't let it go. Not an Apple fanboi by any means as it's the only apple product that I currently own.

Any thoughts on the new 5 starting at 32 GB and having a 64 and 128 options?
....or is that anti-Apple thinking.....with Apple wanting peeps in the cloud...thus smaller storage space on the phone.

As for the laggy OS...I'm gonna guess you've just restored and and restored and restored ever since you had your first iphone. I know I have...and yeah my OS is getting laggy.
Which is why when I get the 5 I will be treating that phone as new, and not restoring anything.

128gb would short sale their supply on their MBA line, unless supply has increased.

Umm duh...the home button was covered under apple care....even if youre out of warrany you could try your luck as its a fairly known issues. I went through two 4 bodies...my current has been good for some time now.

As for restoring I dunno. I guess with iCloud I could choose what I restore now instead of everything.
I think I'll restore first, see how it runs and then decide from there.

I do this whenever I hardware upgrade. I assume doing so once and awhile helps ditch weird errors. I do the same with all computers etc.
