But a switch to Intel or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. processors is probably not in the cards for tomorrow's Macs, sources said. Such a move would require a massive revision of Apple's closed hardware architecture and a fundamental rethinking of its business model, which is founded on tight integration between its proprietary system software and hardware. Apple would have to also coax most of its third-party developers to rewrite their applications from the ground up in the company's Cocoa application environment. (Most major vendors have instead tuned their applications to Carbon, a set of Mac OS X-compatible APIs originally culled from the classic Mac OS and rooted in the PowerPC architecture.)

I would like to see Adobe write Photoshop in pure Cocoa... BY 2008 they may be done.

Apple has a small piece of the PC market and they are not focusing on that side as much as they are with their overproced iPods. News like this give apple free marketing broadcasted by the news sites/channels, and thus continue their "successful" sale of MP3 devices IMO.

zamo: apple focuses plenty on the computing side of their business.

their piece is small but significant in demographic. it remains their core business, ipods and itunes aside.

someone at work (full of balls to the walls geeks) said one of the rumors was it was for laptop only cause of g5 in laptop issues

but i dont know how accurate that is, because for the g4 laptop's they aren't using a desktop g4 but one modified enough that it doesn't drink power

PPC abandoned

"why?"

"because we want to be making the best computer"

"we don't know how to build them with the future of the PowerPC roadmap"

great move....i guess. Open the market and reduce costs. I can see the marketing now. Mac on same chip as MS and still have it out perform.

Developers of Panic softwafre (Unison/Transmit) say X86 compatibility is as easy as a recompile for them.

over half of all osx apps are already on xcode and will simply need recompile.

25% more moving to xcode... 19% no plans

i find the choice of intel over amd unbelivably interesting

1) from an image standpoint wintel represents the opposite market from apple
2) amd's new dual core 64 bit design's seem to coincide with the g5
