Apple Cinema display help

I have a 20 inch Apple Cinema monitor and a 15 inch powerbook. I have a current setup in my room that just makes sense to connect the monitor to the powerbook. However, I noticed that the display on the Cinema Display is not full screen even at full resolution as set from the Powerbook which is 1680 by 1050. For some reason, the only way I can get a full screen picture on the Apple Cinema Display is 1280 by 800. It works fine, but I would just like to get the highest resolution possible (1680 by 1050). If I set it to the highest resolution, it only fills the center of the screen and the area around it is just black.

Anyone know what is wrong? Or is that just how Apple made it?
