Anyone have the HP NC6000 notebook?
Its about 5.8lb and powerful enough with enough features to be a desktop replacement....I was wondering if its light enough to lug around from class to class in college?
If anyone has this give me some feedback as it has gotten rave reviews.

All other suggestions will be taken! I would like a standalone video card I dont know why but just for peace of mind so I know I can run everything for college...that throws out my #1 choice gateway 200xl, .94 inch thick.
I don't remember seeing a single laptop with video that isn't onboard, but I never made that a point to look.
I have carried around a 20lb laptop bag through airports for a couple hours and that was not the best idea. What you should consider is a bag that rolls or a backpack style bag, something that allows you to keep the stress off one shoulder.
Check out Sony Vaio's for the 16inch screen and 16x1200 resolution.
I would suggest an external hard drive for some extra space for movies and music when in college.
Edit: Also get extended warranty for 2-3yrs so they can replace it if there is a problem. Go for the years depending on how long you think you're gonna keep the laptop.

16inch screen is too big and it would be too heavy for college...Im looking for something pretty light I can take around campus with me, but something powerful as well. The hp nc6000 is fast and powerful with a ton of features available. Its also got a 64mb ati radeon 9600 video card.

Be forewarned, you will be using countless hours reading non stop once you start. Its an oracle for notebook shopping research.
There's a model called "CL56." It's quite popular as a bang-for-the-buck notebook. Try a search on it.

I have an HP NC6000. Standard work issue notebook here... They replaced several people's aging desktops with these and gave us docking stations so that we could continue to use our 21" monitors and keyboard/mouse. We have wireless networking in the building, so the integrated wireless card comes in handy.
It's pretty fast, and does everything it's supposed to do. Battery life is really good as well. I've gotten up to 5 hours on a full charge during a day of meetings.
As for weight, I don't really notice it much, and I lug it home and around the building every day.
I guess I should ask what you are looking to use it for in order to answer whether this would make a good desktop replacement. Office work, web-surfing, wireless stuff, burning CDs, watching DVDs, work just fine. This would probably NOT make a good gaming machine, considering it's limited graphics capabilities. For everything else though, it great.

It has a 14.1 SXGA screen, the dell 600m is expensive and performance is lacking according to many tests, also gets very hot, the IBM is nice but is very expensive. Also no sony's because they have all the features, but are also very slow. Has anyone had an experience with the gateway 200xl as well? I am just scared that with their intel integrated graphics something for school will not display right.

EdgarFanCLS- in terms of the thickness of the notebook is it very noticeable, or is the footprint of the notebook still feel pretty small when carrying it around.

I'm taking a guess at the dimensions (by looking at it here) - I'd say the footprint is 12" X 10" (L X W) and maybe 1 1/4" thick.
Hey Renegade...
I work for HP and this is my standard issue corporate notebook. Like you pointed out, it is fairly light and very easy to carry around. My internal wireless connection on this laptop gets far better reception than my old Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card.
The laptop is very fast and I can have a ton of programs open with no slowdown. I can also play games on it with no problem. Also, as edgar mentioned, the battery life last 5-6 hours.
I highly recommend it! I haven't had any problems.
