oooo good post...I need one as well.

I don't want to spend more than $100 though...so I wouldn't get one with as much space.

I have a 250GB maxtor with firewire and usb 2.0, it is used nearly daily for backups at the office, usually about 15GB transfers to it. I have never had it overheat and it has been fine with staying in my car for a couple days in the winter and being plugged in and working immediately.

We paid nearly $300.00 for it two years ago.

My brother has one, and he really likes it. But I'm not sure what model.

Try reading the reviews here (look for hdds) or here.

I would suggest an internal drive with a drive enclosure like wsklar said. It usually is a lot cheaper and works just as well.

It also gives you the ability to buy a DVD burner,CD burner and/or another hard drive that you could use with the enclosure as well. Swapping may be a little bit of a pain but the cash you will save on all the external devices would make it worth it until you bought additional drive enclosures. Also, you could use the internal hard drive to upgrade a destop computer some day when you want more space on your external hard drive.

That's what I did. Purchased a 200Gb Western Digital internal HD (about $120) and a external case ($30). Works like a charm.

500 GB Lacie Hard Drive with USB 2.0 / Firewire connection

It died 2 weeks before the 1 year warranty expired.

I should be receiving a replacement today.

We have a thread on this every week. Search for them, there's tons of good information already out there.

Just buy an external 3.5" enclosure and a regular hard drive in whatever size you want and pocket the $80-$100 difference that you would pay maxtor or lacie.

I put together a 160gb unit for just over $100 US about a month ago.

get yourself an external case with usb 2.0 or firewire and then purchase a seperate hard drive with an 8 mb buffer. You will not regret it. The cost will be cheaper depending where you shop.

I have one 120GB Lacie Firewire and one 160GB Buffalo (weird brand but there was an $80 rebate) USB 2.0. I prefer the Lacie one because it reads filenames better.
