Do a search for a file called sysoc.inf You should find this file in C:\Windows\inf.

Then look for this line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

You will want to remove the word hide. Then save the file.

Then go into Add/Remove Programs and select Add/Remove Windows Components and it should be in the list. Select it and uninstall it.

Thats it and you should be set to go.

I would advise against the "sysoc.inf" method, which works to remove it. At work every computer that has it removed ended up with an error message every time they logged on after that (goes away when you re-install MSN Messenger). The "official" method of turning it off is as follows:

Run gpedit.msc and go to Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Messenger - you'll find the policies to turn it off.

i cant seem to be able to install msn messenger, after i download it and then go to sign in, it says could not read server or something to that effect. is it because it has to go through my server at work and it is not letting it.
