Android: Application Discussion
I *just* got a Note 2 last week, which is my first android phone ever (coming from an ancient windows mobile phone) I thought it might be useful to have a separate thread just to discuss android apps. Feel free to discuss all things app related. List your top 5 favorite apps or post requests for certain types of apps (does anybody know an app which can do x,y,z?).
As I'm just getting into Android I thought it might be useful to find some jems out there.
I'll begin with posting an app I *just* found which looks very promising: Llama. Free. A location based profile app. You can create various profiles - series of actions based off conditions. It comes with the standard profiles for changing volume when at work/home (after you teach it what is work/home). I created some additional profiles to turn both bluetooth and car mode (not sure what this is yet) on/off upon detection of my paired bluetooth connection. I also created a profile to turn wifi on/off upon detection of my home wifi network. It's got quite a few conditions and actions which you can customize. Neat stuff.
Anyways, please post your favorite apps or request for apps, or other android tips/customizations.

Since you're new to Android, I suggest you get familiar with some of the Android blogs/sites out there. Follow them on Twitter or G+. Most of them are much more active on G+ for obvious reasons. Android Police has a great feature every week where they highlight the best apps that came out:
http://www.androidpolice.com/topics/...s-of-the-week/
They even have one for rooted users:
http://www.androidpolice.com/topics/...-users-series/
We usually also mention some in the Android thread so you can search there. A bunch of us lists apps there that we use and I've listed quite a few there. Android Police covers a good portion of the good stuff though so definitely take a look at their list.

^ It would be nice to have a dedicated thread towards apps here as well instead of having to page thru every page of the android threads to find them.

Yeah true. Its just that I just get lazy to post what I posted on there onto another thread. But I guess to start it off here's two apps that I just came across.
FilePush:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...dXNodHJpYWwiXQ..
^It allows you to Right-Click and send files to your device or Google Drive from Windows. Downside is that it only works on Windows at the moment. The dev said that he's planning to create a Mac and Linux version in the future but ultimately wants to make it a web plugin on Chrome.
PushBullet:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..
^This app is similar to FilePush except its a Chrome Plugin. Its similar to Google's Chrome to Phone but on steroids and what Chrome to Phone should've been! Allows you to push webpages, clipboard, lists to your devices. This one should work on Windows, Macs, Linux.

Dolphin Emulator is coming!
I guess I'll post this here. The Dolphin Emulator (Gamecube) is being ported to Android!
http://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread...what-s-to-come
Preview of it running on the Samsung Chromebook (Same hardware as the Nexus 10):
Lots of work to be done still but it looks like its coming along well. If you know how to compile here's the source code to try it out:
http://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/source/checkout
Supposedly it'll work on the high end devices (not surprising). I'm surprised they even got it to work with the current gen of hardware out there. Will keep an eye on this.

Plex for Android is getting revamped and its looking good. It will have features that are exclusive to the Android platform as well but they didn't clarify which. Video on the link below:
http://vimeo.com/user1450307/plex-kepler-preview
I really like the honest rant about Android they put up as well:
http://elan.plexapp.com/2013/02/11/i...x-for-android/
Its great that developers are starting to make good looking apps. I hope to see more from the others instead of just porting their apps from iOS.
http://vimeo.com/user1450307/plex-kepler-preview
I really like the honest rant about Android they put up as well:
Almost a year ago, I wrote a post introducing Plex for Windows Phone. In that post, I had some harsh words for Android. Turns out a lot has changed since then.
One of my biggest gripes against Android was how unresponsive the user interface was, even after four major iterations of the platform. Little did I know, the geniuses at Google were hard at work on Project Butter, and I have to say, butter tastes good.
What Android has going for it, more than any other mobile platform, is a supreme lack of complacency. Besides silky smoothness, Jelly Bean also introduces large improvements in the notification system. And Google Cloud Messaging (which completely replaced Cloud to Device Messaging), is far superior than iOS push notifications.
When the iPhone came out, it was 5 years ahead of anything else in the space. Indubitably. But one would be hard-pressed to argue that the platform has progressed with anything close to the speed at which Android has. Let’s be frank: when it first came out, Android was crap. But when you have two cars racing on a long straight highway, over time, velocity is everything. So 5 years later, Apple is no longer 5 years ahead. And more dangerously, their speed is unimpressive as of late. Their hardware is outstanding, best in the world. But iOS itself, honestly, feels like it’s languishing.
The other big complaint I had against Android was its development ecosystem. This is something Microsoft understood, and got right with its Metro [sic] toolset. It is very easy to make a nice “modern” Windows app (or whatever they’re calling it this week).
When we first started with Plex for Android, the edit/build/deploy cycle was glacial. So bad that when the app finally ran, you literally forgot what change you were deploying to test. That bad. Google should have focused earlier and with more passion on tooling. Empower the developers, and you’ll reap the rewards when they empower your platform. Annoy your developers, and you’ll have a software ecosystem problem.
Today, that problem is mostly solved. I can edit and deploy to my Nexus 7 in a few seconds. The x86 emulator is much faster than the emulator of yesteryear, running inside a Linux VM, on top of an emulated ARM processor (apparently nobody watched Inception). There are still annoyances, and IntelliJ’s UI designer for layouts is sadly primitive compared to Visual Studio, but it’s much, much better.
So where does that leave Android, and perhaps more importantly, Android users? In a good place, and getting better. For the first time ever, you can actually find Android software which is comparable (and sometimes ever better) than the iOS versions. As an example, I love the Lantern Campfire app. It runs in the background, notifies me of new messages, and looks infinitely better than 37 Signals’ pathetic excuse for an official app. I could go on, but our friend Aayush Arya wrote a brilliant article which I highly recommend you read.
I realize, you’re here for Plex news, not a 500 word meandering diatribe on mobile operating systems, so I apologize. I felt the need to update my previous thoughts on the matter, and, as a fellow Plexian said, eat some crow. Nom nom nom.
I’ll make the actual news short and sweet: we’ve rewritten Plex for Android from scratch. Frankly, we learned a lot of lessons from the old app, and it served us well. But we’ve been reading and re-reading the Android Design Guidelines, and we thought we could do better, especially if we dropped support for older versions of Android.
We targeted Android 3.2 or newer, used some great platform features (Google Cloud Messaging, lock-screen music controls, global search integration), and you’re going to love it. It also supports PlexSync. To everyone who has been patiently waiting, I apologize for the delay, but it will have been worth it. The app is fast, smooth, and beautiful. It uses paging and infinite scrolling and network data compression, which means access to giant libraries is super fast. It supports the same rich filters you’ve gotten to know and love from Plex/Web. And most importantly, it’s a great platform to build on.
We’ve prepared a little video which shows off the new Plex for Android (codenamed Kepler, in case you cared). You’ll want to watch it all the way through, because in the video you’ll see unveiled a surprise MAJOR feature (never seen before) that will literally, blow your minds.
We didn’t just set out to make a great Plex Android app.
We set out to make the most beautiful Android app, period.
When will it be released? This week. On Google Play. As a separate app, so you can run both side by side.
Will it be PlexPass only? Yes. Until it’s out of beta, at which point it will be available as a free upgrade for existing Plex for Android users. (Note that it does not, and will not, support Android versions earlier than 3.2). Also note that the PlexSync feature will always require a PlexPass.
Why 3.2? Because the Google TV runs 3.2, and we like the Google TV.
I have an Android 2.x device. Why do you hate me? At this point almost 90% of our users are running 4.0 or newer. We felt that requiring a modern version of Android was the best move for the app, and the vast majority of our user base.

pandora still has yet to take advantage of the notification bar and its annoying me a lot....

I think Pandora hasn't put one up because they don't want you skipping songs as the artists don't get paid when you do that or something. Probably why it's riddled with ads. I don't notice the ads cause I use the unlimited skips and no regular and audio ads version. Lol. Luckily they still have the widget and it responds to the volume skip trick with CyanogenMod. AOKP also allows you to put any widget on the lockscreen or navbar.

Falcon Pro just added support for the Dash Clock Lockscreen widget. It will now display a notification of your unread Tweets, DM, Mentions on the Lockscreen. Loving this Lockscreen widget more and more. I wasn't aware that the devs could already add their app as an extension. Would like to see more apps take advantage of this new lockscreen which I'm sure they will.

Just a heads up. Falcon Pro is resetting its Twitter tokens so if you purchased the app you will need to update the app and re-log in.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...Wxjb24ucHJvIl0.
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/02/27...ew-more-spots/
Twitter has a 100,000 user token limit and he hit it the other day so now he's using a different token so that people who have the cracked version won't be able to log in immediately since he just updated it just now. Pretty smart idea actually as it removes the people who aren't using the app any more and preventing the piraters from logging it immediately since it would need to be cracked so it gives first dibs would be to the people who purchased the app legally.

After updating, you will be prompted to re-login. This process is quick and should only take you a minute. All your settings, mutes, starred users, etc. will be saved. During the login, the app will check for your Google Play licence.

Yeah. You would need to sign up with DynDNS or No-IP to create a static IP of some sort. That way you can point to that IP address with the app from anywhere. Its been a while since I messed around with DynDNS.

Opera released their new beta browser last night with Webkit:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...a.browser.beta
Try it out for the people having issues with Chrome and Chrome Beta. Its pretty fast and I'm actually liking it a little better than Chrome. It still has some bugs (it is in beta afterall) like missing embedded YouTube links. I can see this replacing my Chrome browser though if it had Chrome Sync or something similar. I know when I used to use Opera as my main browser back in the day they had something like Opera Link but I don't think its working on this beta yet.

I've been looking for an app like this for a while and came across this, Superbeam:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...edev.superbeam
Like Samsung's S-Beam, it uses Wi-Fi to transfer files so bigger files are transferred way faster than Vanilla Android's use of Bluetooth OBEX. The good thing about this is that it works on any Android device with NFC capability. It also works without a WAN so it can create a hotspot via NFC on its own to transfer the files between the devices just like how Android Beam and S-Beam work now without the device compatibility issue.
Wi-Fi Shoot! comes pretty close to this but doesn't have the NFC part and it also costs some money to transfer things besides pictures. Its also pretty confusing to use.

Few apps I've paid for are: Titanium backup and zooper widget.
I dunno what all those apps do, but you dont need to pick out the most expensive apps ahah.
I have a lot of other paid apps, but I got them during the 10 cents deal or free off of amazon.

Yeah. Its very well worth the money. I use it mainly on my Nexus 7 where I hide both the Status Bar and the Softkeys via expanded desktop on CyanogenMod and just navigate my tablet via gestures so I get the full 7" of the display every where. You can customize any gesture you want and it has access to pretty much all the apps on your device. I also use it on my Galaxy Nexus but the real screen estate is not as much as the 7. It would probably be perfect on a Note II or Note I. I can pull down the hidden notification bar via Smart Statusbar on any screen so if I need to see my notifications its there. All apps scale properly and haven't really noticed anything out of the ordinary ever since I've been doing this for the past few weeks now.
The dev has a bunch of other cool apps that emulate Samsung's S-features like the custom S-Pen gestures, Smart Rotate and an internal game time speed up of sorts.

Oh since you wanted to run a media server of sort on your device, you should take a look at Plex:

I know you were setting up VLC direct the other day but Plex should make it a bit easier on your end.

I'll post this here too since most may miss it in the other thread seeing how fast it goes.

App lets you open up camera by a certain motion you do with your phone. And it can be used at anytime from anywhere I believe so long as your phone is unlocked. Closest we will get to that flicking thing of the moto x.

I consider my phone to be a portable computer/toolbox so over the years I've gradually loaded it with apps.
Rather than spamming an obnoxious list here, I used 'sharemyapps' to put them into a web page here:

Hope you find something useful there - I some quirky little things that I find neat (like Roundr for example).

Not sure if you guys heard about the new Nintendo DS emulator DraStic:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....dsemu.drastic
The emulator is amazing. Every game I've tried has been perfect so far on my Nexus 7 (1st gen). The guy wrote it in ARM so it should run as fast, if not faster than the DS because of the specs of the devices nowadays.

Well worth the $8 and it works great with my USB OTG cable and Xbox 360 controller. The app allows you to map button keys just like every other emulator. Also a note, this app doesn't require Root just like all the other emulators on Android.

So, I had an issue with my favorite keyboard but it looks like it was an update problem and a uninstall/re-install fixed it.
If you guys are looking for a super fast keyboard, give TouchPal Keyboard a shot:

I had to go back to the old school android keyboard for a few hours and I could not believe how slow and clunky it felt compared to the Touchpal.

Also Any.do, best to do list i've seen. Evernote was too much for me. Google keep nice and simple. This is simple yet adds proper features that make it very powerful. I have chrome extention as well, and I noticed that in an email convo i will see a box to set a reminder to send an email back later. If i ignore a call on my phone i can also set a reminder to call back. It has a very clean layout and its a great todo app
