Orioles 3,000 Hits Club Star Rafael Palmeiro Tests Positive For Steroids

Rafael Palmeiro, who last month became the fourth member of baseball's 3,000-hit, 500-home run club, will be suspended for violating baseball's drug-testing plan, SI.com's Tom Verducci has confirmed.

The penalty for a first offense is a 10-day suspension without pay. The Orioles will make an announcement at 1:30 p.m. More details are forthcoming.

Palmeiro made headlines on March 17 when he vehemently denied ever taking performance-enhancing drugs during a congressional hearing on steroid use in baseball.

Palmeiro's statement before Congress read as follows: "Good morning, Mr. Chairman and members of the committee. My name is Rafael Palmeiro and I am a professional baseball player. I'll be brief in my remarks today. Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids. Period. I don't know how to say it any more clearly than that. Never. The reference to me in Mr. Canseco's book is absolutely false. I am against the use of steroids. I don't think athletes should use steroids and I don't think our kids should use them. That point of view is one, unfortunately, that is not shared by our former colleague, Jose Canseco. Mr. Canseco is an unashamed advocate for increased steroid use by all athletes."

This will surely taint his carreer. Good job Raffie! You sat before Congress, slammed your fist on the table saying "I've never taken steroids" and now you've tested positive.

This isn't going to help his bid for Cooperstown.

ah man. how embarrassing. and all that ink the media spent a couple weeks ago on why Raffy was/was not a first-ballot HOF after his 3000th hit. his legacy is tarnished big-time. proof positive once again that steroids doesn't necessarily mean you have meat-head physique (a la mcgwire, sosa, giambi, et al) ... it's underrated qualities are keeping athletes in peak condition later in their careers and thru the grind of a 162-game season.

He's already appealed the suspension. This will be interesting. I bet MLB is looking for someone to throw the book at.

IMO, before today's news he was a first ballot inductee

I wonder if he'll be investigated to see if he could possibly be brought up on charges of perjury for his congressional testimony.

Doubtful. Half the guys that sat before Congress lied.

I'm betting on this senario:

He's getting old (he's like 40) and he went to a trainer and said he needed a little extra omph! in his workouts. So he got some supplement that did not say it contained steroids...although it did. Either that or he was using something that was "undetectable" and just got by a new testing method.

From my understanding the league's policy was still very lax and full of loopholes. If this is making news I'm guessing it's pretty open and shut (though he'll probably come up with some steroid cream excuse).

His press release only says this:

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball today announced that Rafael Palmeiro of the Baltimore Orioles has been suspended for 10 days, effective today, for violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

I wish they would test weekly for steroid use in ALL professional athletes. If the test is positive, your fired. End of story.

What really sucks is that my 10 year old is going to see his very first O's game at Camden yards today. I wonder if they are going to make an announcemennt about it or not.

If he actually is guilty he needs to deny it forever.. a la Pete Rose. Otherwise his legacy is finished.

Are we sure that it's steroids? reading the article, it doesn't say what he tested positive for, just that he violated MLB's drug testing plan

We'll find out in 25 minutes at the press conference but I highly doubt Rafael is a coke head.

Whatever, there's so much out there that can lead to a positive test. MLB is to quick with this because of pressure. They need to retest after a positive, then make a judgement.

EW YORK (SI.com) -- Rafael Palmeiro, who last month became the fourth member of baseball's 3,000-hit, 500-home run club, will be suspended for violating baseball's drug-testing plan, SI.com's Tom Verducci has confirmed.

The penalty for a first offense is a 10-day suspension without pay. The Orioles will make an announcement at 1:30 p.m. More details are forthcoming. The Players Association released a statement that its grievance on behalf of Palmeiro has been denied by the The Major League Baseball Arbitration Panel.

In a prepared statement, Palmeiro said he could not explain how the steroids got into his body. "I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period," he said. "Ultimately, although I never intentionally put a banned substance into my body, the independent arbitrator ruled that I had to be suspended under the terms of the program."

Palmeiro seemed in that appearance to be indignant over accusations made by former slugger Jose Canseco, who cited Palmeiro as a steroid user in his tell-all book. In an interview on the CBS television show 60 Minutes, Canseco -- who also testified before Congress -- said he injected the drug into Palmeiro.

Palmeiro is batting .280 with 18 home runs and 59 RBIs this season for the Orioles. For his career, he is a .289 hitter with 569 home runs and 1,834 RBIs. Palmeiro, along with Hank Aaron, Eddie Murray and Willie Mays, are the only players in history with at least 500 home runs and 3,000 hits.

all he gets is a 10 day suspension? this is why I can't stand baseball anymore. How about you delete every record of his out of the books and ban him for life.

I'd also like to see charges filed for perjury, if thats applicable.

Kinda jumping the gun aren't we? I mean lets start an investigation. Are the test results accurate? Did he knowingly take the steroids or were they given to him under false pretenses? You can't automatically erase his records and ban him for 1 positive test.

Fine, give him a trial to prove his innocence. An actual legal trial. Get Canseco up there to testify, make a big deal of this.

Just my two cents, I gave up on baseball a long time ago.
