At 17 my sister started having all kinds of problems with her knees and shoulders, causing her to give it up....and that was from training for competition on a national level. That's exactly what Sacramone was saying after the team competition the other day. The younger girls have an advantage in large part because they haven't had to endure the incredible pounding inherent to gymnastics. By the time you're 17 or 17 in this sport, you're an old woman.

They may have lied about the age but the girls damn sure earned their place on the world stage IMHO.

No one has said they did bad, or aren't world class athletes. The world has no way of knowing though if an even more gifted underage gymnast is out there though. Because other countries likely followed the age rule.

It is just one of those things that is black and white. A rule is a rule. When one side breaks it, it's cheating and it nullifies the results.

I'm 35, and I get asked ALL the time if I'm still in school. This includes other chinese people.
Funnest thing recently was a 23 year old girl who came here from china thought I was younger than she was! ha!

But uhhhh, yeah, they look very young. But as stated, nobody will ever know.
I don't think it's necessarily a 'bash on them since they got gold' thing.
I think bashing China is becoming the big trend now. I think after the singer thing, and
their 'So we lied, big deal' response (reworded), I think it's now open season on them.

Sadly.

^^ Looks alone is one thing. But official Chinese websites documenting their ages as 13 and 14 have been taken down and age references removed.

Something everyone is ignoring here if they are under age for the competition, theres probably a reason for it.

As has been mentioned, the younger a girl is, the smaller her body is and the more flexible she can be. Young children should not be undergoing the same types of physical training an older kid can handle. They are probably doing more damage to their bodies because of this.

I almost see this as more of an issue of exploitation of minors by the Chinese government than anything else.

I couldn't care less whether the US lost or the Chinese won. My concern is that a the Chinese government is forcing preteens to compete and train as if their bodies can handle it. I'd be surprised if any of these girls are still competitive at the next summer games or if their bodies are too damaged at that point.

ANd once they're done China just throws them away. NBC News had a story on tonight about what China does. They put them in Government controlled schools and practice five or more hours a day. These are kid 4, 5, 6 years old. They are taken from their parents. The report says that the kids may see the parents a couple times a year.

They then showed a 33 yr old women who was on the Chinese Army Ski team at the age of thirteen, once she was done they dumped her, but not before almost letting her die. She has diabetes, the "Sports Doctors" never "saw" it. She now lives with her mom, in a one room house, like 8x10 on $33 per month, welfare.

As for the Archery programs, Chinese spectators need to have some basic manners. I was watching the finals the other day, those Chinese spectators were shouting and blowing whistles when the opponent team was up to shoot.

US is just a sour loser.

The US gymnast have much more world medals + experience than the Chinese girls combined, yet the US team made more mistakes.

With all that experience + world medals,
the US team shouldn't have made those mistakes.

Hopefully tonight, the US gymnast will do well on their individual matches

Lose or not, the supplied underage girls, that is against the rules. This was also mention after the first night of competition on Monday. No one is going to be able to prove it. Though the China Media reported that the one girl was 13 less than a year ago.

Wrong. The US just wants the Chinese to follow the same rules that ALL the other countries do. They, the Chinese, are so pressured to look good in the eys of the world, they'll do anything to do so.

There is no question the American women's team choked, but at least they played by the rules set before them.

this is NOT about the US losing to the chinese or the US blaming the chinese.

the majority here are under agreement that the US choked.

it's about the chinese breaking the rules, and that's an issue whether they beat the US or japan or russia, etc.

Because they'll do anything to get what they want. Go read about what they do the the kids to get them in the programs for sports and what they do with them afterwards. Tiananmen Square is a perfect example of what they'll do if you don't do what they want.

People on the forum is taking this thread the wrong way..here's a break down why we mad:

We mad because there are age rules in the olympics, and China is in the spotlight because of their young gymnist.

We ARE not mad because we didn't win. That's not what we are arguing in this thread.

If we have rules and dont follow them, whats the point of having it in the first place?
