Olympics: 2014 Winter Games News and Discussion Thread

Hey jupitersolo, I`m not Russian, nor a sympathizer.
But I am of Greek descent and it goes without saying how interested I am in keeping the essence and true nature of the Olympics competitive the way it originally was intended to be.
Politicians in Olympics. Nero then Emperor of Rome competed in our Olympic games and won every event he entered. (He cheated) Shortly there after the ancient games ceased to exist. King Constantine (Greece) in the modern day version of the Olympics competed in Equestrian events.
Keep politics out of the games.

Politics can't be kept out of the Olympics. From the bid process to the competition, it is entrenched in politics. You don't spend billions of dollars on the whole process without it being political. Even if you were to put the blinders on and just pay attention to the events themselves, politics still are involved. Mexico sound familiar? Munich? SLC figure skating (sort of)? The construction has impact on generations after.

Sharing the Olympics with the world is yet another gift from the Greeks that we can all be proud of. The Ancients would never have dreamed of how the games have evolved with the Winter Olympics and the many additions of the Summer Olympics and finally being a world wide event. Or did they?
Thank You French and English for bringing the games back and thank you Russians for Sochi.

In case no one knew, Bob Costas has Pink Eye.
Just saying, in case you didn't know.
'Cause some people didn't know, so I wanted to say it.

That's a pretty inaccurate statement. That would imply that Pierre de Coubertin just came up with the idea out of thin air. Not only did he take the idea from the ancient Olympics, but he then took all of William Brooks' ideas and created an Olympic committee which consisted of people all around the world. Let's not get carried away and assume that since one French guy was the first head of the modern Olympic committee that somehow the French invented the modern Olympics. Haha that was a good try though.
Are you trying to say you're French and now since its a French invention (in your mind) you get to dictate how much politics can be involved in the Games?
