I'm kind of excited for these games, only to see how bad it is.
I hope not a repost

Actually Sochi isn't too bad it appears. Beaches on one side and mountains on the other.

City shithole.. Have you been there? Or, wait, you are getting your knowledge from the media funny pictures threads?
It's a resort town who just spend 51 billion in creating something that was never there...And only Americans are flabbergasted by finding things uncomfortable. I can show you spots in NYC that look worse than Sochi mishaps.
Today's biggest story is that USA athletes are very upset because Russia stopped its Chobani shipment.

^ They have the same warning in NJ. Ever had water pipe work done? What color is the first water out of it? Again, getting your facts from one funny picture.

Ya we're not there so we can only go by what we're hearing. Canadian reporter was on the radio this morning and said the water in his hotel runs clear and yellow. Said he took a shower for the first time in 3 days because he couldn't take his stink anymore. Doubt he was lying.
Co-worker there for 2 weeks, can't wait to hear his thoughts when he gets back.

I think most of us have had water line issues and repairs, and are familiar with orders to not drink water or to be on a boil water advisory.
Most of us though haven't spent $51 billion to do it and still aren't done when the big party starts.

So funny hearing how some hotels don't have a spare key, so they just take off the whole door.

From the WSJ:
In mother Russia, we have cameras in the shower watching you.
SOCHI, Russia—Rooms without doorknobs, locks or heat, dysfunctional toilets, surprise early-morning fire alarms and a Welcome Wagon of stray dogs: These are the initial images of the 2014 Winter Olympics that foreign journalists have blasted around the world from their officially assigned hotels—and the wave of criticism has rankled Russian officials.
Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, reflected the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. "We're doing a tour of the media center," the aide said.

I'm just annoyed that in the age of hysteria and social media we always rooting for someone to fail so we can blog about it. Olympics is about coming together and overcoming all obstacles. I think of great hockey match-ups while you are thinking how they failed in providing the expected world-class accommodations. They've effed up. They know it. If the events will get effected in some negative way they can wave their future hopes for any Olympics goodbye.

But I'd prefer this thread to be about great performance from all nations and medal count.

I distinctly remember the last couple of Olympics like that, and I think Atlanta had qualifying rounds of softball and soccer. Summer is worse.

And if you believe that screwing this up means that the IOC will never consider Russia again for an Olympics, you clearly have not given much thought to how a summer resort town on the Black Sea would have been selected as the site for a Winter Olympic Games. No one is rooting for anyone to fail, but putting your graft and poor planning on display for the entire world to see is bound to generate some feedback, wouldn't you agree?

IIRC, qualifying stuff can start a few days before the opening ceremonies (or like soccer in the summer starts like a week or 2 before lol), but all medal events are after the opening ceremony.

I'm actually very upset over the dog's population. It's horrible. In Russia there is no laws for dog's owners to obey. You buy a dog and next day you can abandon it. They are killing hundreds of dogs right now by poisoning them. Sochi had this problem for decades. It's sad. F@ck Putin.
