The comments that were made by Stephen A Smith are do make sense though. Said through ESPN that the reason of not resigning with the Lakers was that its not the same anymore. The pitch that was given to him were the Dr. Buss days. Now, son who doesn't have the same vision has his father does, the team doesn't seem its the same anymore. I still think that Mike Brown would've been a better coach than D'antoni but wasn't given a chance with D12 in the mix. Hell even Bernie Bickerstaff was better than D'antoni coaching that team. D'antoni is a good coach, but not a championship coach. But ultimately its not D'antoni's fault but its Jim Buss's fault. He should just let Mitch Kupcheck, just do his job instead of stepping over him

Agreed. Who knew Shaq was correct afterall in his assestment of Howard. Dude want to play grabass with his friends in Houston and shave each others backs during the offseason then so be it. Good riddance!!! ALL players say they want a Chip but coming from Howard, I dont get a sense its genuine...just lip service. Didnt Houston win a token Championship trophy simply because MJ was playing baseball?
As far as the Lakers go, I'm dissapointed we didnt go after resigning Clark. Now I'm hearing Sasha, Farmar, and Lamars name being kicked around. Seems like we want to go cheap this offseason and sign a bunch of 1yr deals. I'm ok with that philosophy as long as it is a small part of a bigger plan to get us back on top.

In regards to Clark when he was to inconsistent he would play good for a couple of games then disappear for the next several games so I'm not surprised they let him go he doesn't fit into their future plans.

Writers were going nuts over Kobe's Instagram photo and comments and that he unfollowed Dwight on Twitter. Meanwhile Pau unfollowed and then re-followed ![Spit](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/spit.gif)
I think the move was the best for both parties. Lakers set up for 2014 FA and Dwight goes to a nice young team with a team that's undisputably his.

Lakers wanted Dwight, but I'm glad they didn't overextend his power by firing Mike D'Antoni and hiring Phil for him. Yes, I wanted Phil too, but Dwight got SVG fired, then wanted him back, then left Orlando even though they bent over backwards for him. Even though I would love to have Phil back, Dwight wasn't a franchise player that they would do that for. He waffles so much, he could have ended up not liking Phil as well, lol.
As Doom and everyone's saying this was best for both parties. It only points out the value in guys like Pau and Kobe that want to be here.
I think this is the final 'echo' of the CP3 veto, which is good. The Lakers could have skipped a rebuild altogether with CP3 and Dwight, but that didn't happen, so its time to cut bait and move on.
I think the bigger drama than this will be what they do with Kobe. If he wants to win, he needs to take another paycut. He did take quietly take a paycut in 09 I believe to keep Pau and setup to sign another player, so he's not above that. But older players, especially these alpha players are extremely sensitive.

Absolute best article by someone here in LA. Not some idiot opinion-maker on the other side of the country who doesn't stay up late enough to watch west coast games, lol.
Note: A dying Jerry Buss' wish was to hire MDA. Not Jim. Jim nor Jeannie was going to go against their dying dad's wish. And as for hiring Phil at the wishes of Dwight, he was nowhere close to earning that right to do so. Didn't show them enough.

Nine years ago, the Lakers had no choice but to wait. No hints were forthcoming, no tweets to tip them off. The news came more slowly, not minute-by-minute. But the same sense of dread filled the air.
Every indication then pointed toward 25-year-old Kobe Bryant bolting for the younger, fresher Los Angeles Clippers. But there was time then. Enough time for the Lakers to turn him around. And ultimately that's what the Lakers owner at the time, Dr. Jerry Buss, did in a last-minute, face-to-face meeting with his young star.
This time around, with Dr. Buss gone and his son and GM Mitch Kupchak in his place, the Lakers weren't as persuasive. And instead of one last face-to-face meeting, they merely got the word from Dwight Howard when he reached his decision and Twitter quickened the pace of the news. Or maybe they never had a chance to retain Howard anyway.
Whatever the case, he's gone. The once-a-decade superstar the Lakers found a way to trade for, and had ticketed for face-of-the-franchise status, will be wearing red in Houston now.
What does this mean for the Lakers? Does it set them back? Is the mystique gone? Or does Howard's failure to launch in Los Angeles actually strengthen the brand as fans and Laker greats come together to howl that not everyone is worthy of the purple and gold?
The following look at the state of the Lakers and how we got here is based on conversations with many of the principals involved, both during the season and during the past week.
For many reasons, only some of which involve Howard or his decision, this is a monumental moment in Lakers history. Dr. Buss passed away this spring. His children are running the organization and still finding their own voices. Bryant is in his golden years, hoping for another championship run or two. Phil Jackson is in Montana, but always just a phone call -- or tweet -- away. Mike D'Antoni remains the coach, but with plenty of baggage.
There is some clarity now that Howard has finally made a decision. But there is still so much to be settled.

Ya, him and/or Elton Brand. Slim pickings since they are only offering 1 year.
Odom and Sasha Vujacic too. This year is going to be ugly.

There certainly will be entertaining storylines. You guys moving on, Houston and Howard, San Antonio's revenge, can OKC come back with a healing Westbrook, new look Nets, Boston rebuilding, Indy rising, Chicago coming back. Miami's 3peat story is pretty boring compared to the rest of the league. Is it Halloween yet?

^^ha. I hope he would join, but I seriously doubt that would ever happen. Melo is more likely to me, but even that seems a stretch.
BTW, Lakers just signed Chris Kaman for the mini-MLE. Decent value for that kind of money. And he's hilarious on Twitter. Take that Dwight.

^^I've read the 4 guys targeted are Kyrie, Love, Lebron, or Anthony. At least one of those guys are going to want to leave. They'll have room for 2 max players.
Not sure about Melo either. And why would he want to play for Mike D'antoni again?

^ I actually like Dantoni. Pretty much all of the successful offenses today use his original offense theory - high pick and roll, and dish to open perimeter shooter.
Unfortunately for it to work you need: 1. a fast and High IQ point guard with good court vision (i.e. young Nash and Jeremy Lin) and 2. a Big man that can set good screens that has hands to actually catch the ball (Stoudamire/Tyson Chandler).
Two things the lakers don't have.

sorry, I haven't been following... but did I read somewhere that the Lakers dropped MWP? And what's going on with Steve Nash? Is he still on the roster? I swear, I knew he was going to get hurt and sit up the second I heard he was putting a Lakers jersey

^^MWP is in limbo right now. He's probably gonna get amnestied, but I think the 10th is when that can start happening.
The Knicks want him if he gets amnestied.
Nash is still on the roster. I'm kinda glad that Dwight is gone, because he never set a good screen for him...always slipped the screen. Hopefully we see a better, uninjured Nash this year.

Yeah moratorium was lifted at midnight EST this morning. Lakers paid $29.2MM in taxes, Heat $13.3MM, Nets $12,883,647, Knicks $9,962,406, Bulls $3,932,336, Celtics $1,181,640. Next year is worse. The Nets right now would be charged around $70MM ![what](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/what.gif)
Heat re-sign Birdman to a 1 year. 14 of 15 except Juwan Howard remain with the team. Will 15 be Oden?
The Cleveland Cavaliers have offered free-agent center Andrew Bynum a two-year contract worth an incentive-laden $12 million annually, sources close to the process told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.
Bynum has not canceled scheduled recruiting visits this week with the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks despite the offer, which he received Monday
Hansbrough to the Raptors and Jermaine O'Neal to the Warriors. Pretty close to Howard

Great (but both hilarious and tragic) analysis from CNNSI of the Howard fiasco and how his trade from Orlando affected (and ruined) the teams involved: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nba...1_a3&eref=sihp

I was about to be a noob and post in the 2012 NBA thread, and was like there is no way no one is talking about all this shit that is going on.
Anyway...... Glad Howard is gone, wish the Lakers would dump Pau. Metta World Peace gone, but who didn't see that coming. He said he wants to play for NYK since NY is his hometown or play for the Clips. If he can't get with either of those 2 teams he said he will retire.
What's the word with Jodie Meeks?

Jodie Meeks is staying. Lakers also picked up Nick Young and should sign Jordan Farmar soon.
Not game changers by any means, but those guys along with Kaman signed for a bag of chips. Not bad for vet minimum contracts 1 yr contracts.

I'm gonna miss Metta. Guy changed his life for the better out here in LA and was flat out clutch in that 2010 championship. The lockout year messed him up....he shoulda stayed ready. Lost a lot of his lateral quickness.

Doom, Asianspec: What's the thought on Brooklyn amongst Heat fans? Can they threaten you guys? Lotta of bodies they've got there.
Dwill, Jet, Pierce, Garnett, Lopez, Johnson, AK47....I don't think they threaten, but they do have plenty of depth, and they have a A+ point guard and a decent center.

Yeah I was surprised at AK47's signing since they were already over the cap.
Nets look good on paper, but jury is still out on J. Kidd as a head coach... But if you play Lopez and Garnet together, you pretty much have the defense taken care of.

Cocky Heat fans predicting 3peat
Honestly nobody in the East scares me except for Indy. Chicago has the same team that we beat in 5 with less depth and we're better/deeper.
Let's see how good Jersey is and uses these guys. DWill will penetrate and kick to open shooters which could hurt like the Spurs did. However KG is no Duncan and I'm not sure how they'll use two post players. Honestly I'm not familiar with Lopez's game. Pierce and Johnson shoot great from the outside so it'll be interesting.

The man with the most pressure now is J Kidd. As BraveDemon was saying, I'm not sure about him either. But what he does have on his side is veteran players. Especially Garnett, those guys have a good idea of how a locker room should run.
My opinion about KG vs. Duncan in that context is that I think KG can move better on defense than Duncan can. Duncan is better at PF, but KG is better with his mobility on D, which is important against the Heat in particular. He has no problem stepping out against perimeter players.
Lopez's game is good but I don't know how good to be honest.

But, at the same time, it is Metta. A man who looking at his Twitter & media comments, appears to be an idiot who happens to be good at basketball, is actually a bit of a crafty sob. I don't think we've seen the last of Metta in the NBA. I wouldn't be surprised if after this season when the Lakers have all that cap space that Metta returns for minimum. The guy obviously found a home in the organization & doesn't want to play for anyone but them.

^^excellent guy in the community and is considered by many laker fans a true laker at heart because of how much he committed to the team. Nash and Kobe loved playing with him....definitely more savvy than he lets on.
He wants to stick around LA for his kids apparently, but is considering his hometown knicks too. I personally wish him the best.

Just caught that this afternoon. Happy for him, though. Love watching him play just because you never know what he's going to say after the game.
Wonder what Kobe thinks since hes always making his thoughts known on Twitter.
