Couple Hot Stove Updates

1. Reds Trade for Mar Latos.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb

Latos will be a big help to the Reds. The prospects will likely pay off for the Padres.

To me it seems like an odd deal for the Reds because most people say that they are not going to retain Votto and Alonso would have been able to take over at 1st base. I think this helps make them the best team (or second best) in the NL Central.

2. Rollins resigns with Philly.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb

Not a bad deal for Philly. I think he will be good this season and next and will decline in year 3. The key is to keep him healthy. For the Phillies they got him pretty cheap considering what he wanted.

3. Cuddyer signs with the Rockies.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb

I like Cuddyer. Can play 5 different positions. He will hit for some good power in Colorado .

4. Jason Kubel signs with the D-backs.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb

No real opinion. To me he is a good player that will hit for power and average.

1)Latos will automatically make the Reds a better staff. Him along with Cueto, Chapman and Wood will make their staff one of the best in the NL. Latos will be in a for a surprise though; Great American Ballpark is like a tin of Altoids compared to Petco.

2)Good to see Rollins stay with the Phillies. I would like to see him end his career as a Philly. Not many players stay on one team forever. Good for him and the Phillies. <--did i just say that?!

3)No real opinion here. Good player though.

4)x2 no real opinion here.

here's my dime on Yu Darvish + the other Asian imports:
Watching Darvish in the 2009 WBC pitching against Korea I was impressed but to be honest he's not a "pitcher" he's a thrower. He can get rattled i've seen it a few times as I do seldomly catch NPB games on Korean TV (here in NYC). Darvish is nasty yes, but he's more concerned with the swinging K instead of tactical pitching. Nevertheless he's young and with a solid year(or two) in the minors he'll be sick with Texas.

Norichika Aoki - The Brewers won the bid for another Niger Morgan type player. Aoki is a better hitter for sure but he isn't over the top. They're gonna miss Ryan Braun's productivity for 50 games lol

Tsuyoshi Wada - this lefthander is tricky. Great pitcher that i've seen in too many international tournaments not to endorse. Good signing for the Orioles. He's thrown into the fire in the AL east lol!

oh, and for the few other Mets fans here, here's something to laugh or smirk at:

That's what pissed me off about him the most....he had really good stuff but was never consistent and never able to get it all together at one time. One minute he would strike out the best hitter in the game and then he would give up a home run to the pitcher.

I can't believe Barry Bonds once said that Oliver Perez was the best Lefthander he has faced

Oliver Perez is a mental case. With all of the money he got from the Mets, he should pay for a therapist. Hey, it helped out Greg Maddux!

I think the Nats had to make this trade. They probably over paid but it's all prospects.

A's got a great haul for Gio. Nats signed Mark Derosa too.

Beltran might be ok for two years in STL if he can stay healthy.

Cubs traded Sean Marshall to Cincinnatti for Travis Wood and 2 minor leaguers.

Anyone else wants to be Ozzie's bartender this coming season? He's going to have to deal with Hanley, Zambrano and Reyes. I hope for his sake that they do win or else he is going to have to enter into a rehab program.

Also....WTF....no one signed Prince yet? I can't believe it is taking so long for him to get a decent offer. I would think someone would have at least offered 5 years/$130 Million by now.

How did Ozzie handle egos in Chicago?

And Logan Morrison is hilarious on Twitter. He keeps joking how he's taking Rosetta Stone for spanish lessons since he can't understand Ozzie Guillen and all the Latins we're getting. Ozzie's Twitter is a fucking huge disaster.

I think it takes a nut job to handle a bunch of other nut jobs

Apparently Ozzie and Zambrano have been big buddies for a while now, so maybe the whole change of scenery thing will help him.

And yeah, if the team turns out to be a disaster I think we'll be seeing a lot of meltdowns

As for the Reds trades, I was a little shocked when I first heard about them, but after looking closer I liked them. Very happy to see Volquez go, but not so happy to see Wood go, but I understand. I trust what Jocketty is doing and can't wait for baseball season!

Oh, and Jim Bowden (former Reds GM) called the Latos trade "the next Herschel Walker trade" while all the other writers were saying it was a good deal for both He's such a little bitch...can't believe ESPN employs him

It's because Prince is overrated, and is expecting to get Albert Pujols money despite not being quite as talented.

Also, hoping Seth Smith will find a new team that will actually have use for him, he's a decent hitter and there's currently not any room for him in Denver. That, and I'd love to pick up one of his jerseys on sale

I don't think he deserves Albert money. The problem is I don't think Albert deserved Albert money. No one does. That contract is based partly on Albert's performance and his ability to sell tickets. You think that he is going to be able to put up his numbers in 6 years?

As for Prince being over-rated....I don't really agree with that either. Not counting his first partial season, he averages 38 homers a season. His RBI's are low but he is on a team with a much lower OBP and he has little protection.

What do you think his numbers would be in Colorado?

Teams have to be afraid of his body falling apart in his 30s, more than other players because of his body type.

Larkin elected to HOF

No surprise, but I had to post since I grew up watching him my entire life

http://content.usatoday.com/communit...hall-of-fame/1

EDIT: Also congrats to Ron Santo who will be inducted with him.

Also from the article:

Next year Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa are on the ballot for the first time, all who have been convicted or linked to steroid/HGH use. The ballot also will include second baseman Craig Biggio, catcher Mike Piazza and pitcher Curt Schilling. The ballot will only get stronger in future years with Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Frank Thomas, Jeff Kent and Mike Mussina eligible in 2014; Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Gary Sheffield in 2015; and Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman in 2016.

Next few years will be insane

Reds sign Ryan Madson for 1 year, 8.5 million. This better put Chapman in the rotation.

Madson shoulda took the 11 million per year deal from the Phils Cordero and others probably won't get as much as they were planning now.

Not exactly a secret but the Marlins are known as a huge player for Cespedes whenever his citizenship to the DR is granted. The president was on his weekly radio appearance with Dan Le Batard last night and all but confirmed that he's confident we're getting him.

I guess Detroit looked at the two big money power teams in the AL East and AL West and realized they could possibly be the lone power team in the Central.

The gap between rich and poor continues to grow.

And you can't help but think the Nationals really really wanted to sign him, but couldn't come up with enough cash because of the Jayson Werthless contract. So unbelievably dumb

Yah I saw that, they removed the pinstripes. I'm glad the Rockies organization has kept their uniforms standard since their inception. Can't say that for the Padres though lol...

Speaking of uniforms, the Astros are talking about a uniform makeover and possible team name change when they move to the AL (where they'll be a permanent resident of the basement for years)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201..._a20&eref=sihp

The Astros have had several uniform styles in their history, including the shooting star jerseys and the now infamous rainbow ones. They've had their current uniforms, which include road grays and primarily home reds since 2000. They also have alternate home white and white with black pinstriped jerseys.

Crane said some past uniforms could be incorporated into a new design.

I can see them using the rainbow theme and it looking like a bastardized version of the new Marlins uniforms

I believe I read once that he thought Cecil was either trying to or did take some of the money he got from his rookie contract and signing bonus, but there may be more to the story.

I understand the move for this year but what happens in 2013? Trade Cabrera or Martinez? Cabrera wasn't great at 3B and is bigger albeit more fit than his last years in FL. Boras earned his money this time around. I thought Prince wasn't getting the shaft contractwise.

Martinez is going to be 34 the next time he plays. I think they will look to trade him. The way the team looks to be now is that they will have Price play first and Cabrera try to play 3rd to allow Martinez to DH when he comes back in 2013. I agree with you that Cabrera may just be a full time DH though.

Personally I think it is a really good deal if they can get Cabrera to play a serviceable 3rd base.

He was working out with Hanley. Both are converting to 3B.

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/pla...=348318&spln=1

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com writes that there's still a feeling that Yoenis Cespedes "really doesn't want to go to the Marlins."
Interesting. The Marlins certainly haven't been shy about their interest and believe Miami's strong Cuban community could be the best fit. It's not known why Cespedes would prefer to play elsewhere, but we have a feeling he would change his tune if the Marlins make the biggest offer. The 26-year-old outfielder recently established residency in the Dominican Republic and teams are awaiting on the OK from MLB to start the bidding. Cespedes has previously said that the Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers, and Indians were the six teams showing the most interest in signing him. Jan. 25 - 1:50 pm et
Hopefully just posturing

I just got tickets to the Yankees/Miami Marlins exhibition games April 1-2 at the new marlins stadium. May as well go see the monster that was scammed into existence by the crooked Miami gov.
Meaningless game & sad really they have to play it just to get people to come to a game....

The Reds and Marlins are the only two teams not to have a Japanese player. But you guys did carry Bong for a season.
