I pretty much agree with you about the student athlete thing. You were expected to put everything else behind your sport. I remember each year we were required to go to a NCAA meeting each year, I found out about 10 minutes before the meeting (my coach's fault) and went to speak to our NCAA rep (the person who is in charge of keeping student athlete's eligible). I told her that I had a meeting with a professor, and asked if there was ANY way that I could make it up. She told me that it wasn't her problem that I had a meeting with my professor and that if I left then it would be my fault that I wasn't eligible. I mean WTF? It was her job to keep student athletes eligible and she's basically giving me the finger. I left anyway . . .
Also if I followed the academic advisers advice I'd have graduated in about 6 years with a degree in Liberal Arts.
Oh well, que sera sera.

That's what happens to team who feel that their NBA championships are preordained and the competition should fear them just because of their names. Also, I see that Gary "The Mitten" Payton got to play in the fourth quarter finally. Too bad it was a blowout loss. Go LA Fakers!!!!! :'(

Sorry Junkster, but I gotta get in on this one.
Are "student athletes" money makers for the university? Absolutely.
Do the athletes know this? Probably, unless they got a 400 on their SAT before being heralded as model student athletes.
Do the universities care much for the overall well being of the athletes? I doubt it unless it impacts their bottom line (money, graduation rates).
Do I for one second feel that student athletes have been victimized? Please. I was lucky, my grandmother saved up all her life and basically paid for my college - by my estimates about $45000 worth over 4 years. Had that not been the case, I would have gladly taken out loans (which as you know I now have in quantity) because my parents could not realisticlly afford it. As an athlete, you guys take thier money and in turn, abuse your bodies for "the love of the game" (sure.....). In exchange, athletes get the potential of a monetarily free education (if they take advantage like you did), status on campus (prolly not worth much unless you're going pro), and in the case of the real game breakers, preferential treatment. Every university does it - I went to A&M, our biology TA was explicitly told to not flunk the athletes - require extra mind numbing/easy work ok, but they need to be passed. Personally, I think the whole thing just sets y'all up for failure. By yall I mean what I perceive to be the majority of athletes who barely graduate and aren't going pro. They get a degree, but can't complete a sentence or do simple division.
I'm sorry, I have little to no sympathy for the "I abused my body for the man and then he left me hanging" sentiment. It was a trade off - you are intelligent and must have realized this a while back - sorry if you felt used, but ain't nothing in this world free. Hope this doesn't piss you off too much, but I too am passionate about this subject (and one of its cousins too).
BTW, go Pistons - so long as LA and Karl Malone don't get a ring it's all good. The Lakers looked shell shocked last night - loving every minute of it. Did they set a record for steals or were the Lakers just that shitty for a while?

It was as if he was saying, okay, we let you get one, but we know who the better team is and we'll come out and show it in the rest of the series. Well, his shot at the end of game 2 and his play in overtime maybe justified that smirk a bit, but gentlemen, please tell me, WHERE IS THAT SMIRK NOW ????

That's why I state that the best way to change things would be to adopt the european system of having sports clubs that develope pro athletes instead of colleges. What's the point of college athletics but to say "oh, these kids are great athletes as well as people and a great student"... For some of us, that might have been the case, but the ones that know that they are pro-bound, what's the point of going to class?
I understand you're point of view, there is nothing wrong with a discussion of free minds, I'm stating my point of view, and so are you... I might disagree in some points, but none the less, you make you're point well...
And yea, it is great to see the Lakers sulking on the bench...
Junkster, who really lost all respect for Malone

Very respectful? Are you kidding me? Have you not read any of the stories about how Kobe Bryant treats the people around him and his teammates? Check out some of the past issues of ESPN the magazine, Sports Illustrated, and some info on the LA Times website and finally, do a Google search on Kobe Bryant. He is one spoiled sucker whos been used to getting his way for damn near his entire life.

i can tell you most of the players on the lakers act like whiners and jerks,
-derek fisher (whiner)
-rick fox (scruffy man i wish doug christie would punch him again).
-horace grant (traitor according to bulls fans)
-byron russell (crossed over by jordan in the utah shot)
-kobe (stop plagarizing jordan)
-shaq (please stop mumbling in your interviews and starring in awful movies like "kaazam")
-gary payton (why do you look so pissed off all the time)
-karl malone (the mailman is shelved)
-luke walton (why do u act like it wasn't your fault in those fouls?, don't hear your dad on tv anymore)

i read the newspaper today and kobe guarantees a win tonight!
he said he'll score 60 pts., hmmm Jordan again has said that before.
what did i say again kobe? :fingerfawk:
the lakers might win tonight, i hope i'm wrong. i just want the pistons to win tonight to put the lakers out of their misery and see malone's, kobe's, fisher's, shaq's, and payton's faces at the end of the game. if the lakers lose, i bet fisher is going to cry again.

I'm not completely at ease until Detroit closes out the series...
It doesn't matter that no team has overcome a 3-1 deficit, this team might become the first to do it...
