Ducks lock up Niedermayer brothers

Scott Niedermayer

TSN.ca Staff

8/4/2005 10:35:09 AM

The most coveted defenceman in the free agent market finally found a home on Thursday, as veteran blueliner and 2004 Norris Trophy winner Scott Niedermayer has signed with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The deal for four years at $6.725 million per season, while brother and new teammate Rob signed a four year contract at $2 million per season.

New Jersey was Niedermayer's NHL home since 1992, after the Devils took him with the third overall pick in the 1991 draft.

Niedermayer has spent 12 full seasons with the Devils, winning three Stanley Cups and the 2004 Norris trophy as the NHL's top defenceman.

In addition to his Stanley Cup titles, Niedermayer has won an Olympic Gold medal, a World Championship, the World Cup, the Memorial Cup and a World Junior title. He is the only player in hockey history to have won all six titles.

The Devils and San Jose Sharks were also believed to be offering long term contracts to Niedermayer.
Looks like it was a package deal. No way in hell I give Rob 2 mill per.

Maybe the deal for Rob also includes some team benefits with his wife Nicki?

Ok... Here's some random Flyer thoughts.. They lose Recchi, Amonte and Leclair and god knows who else and they pick up some scrubs in the trade and Forsberg. And added some defensemen.. I just don't get all the hype surrounding how well they are doing.. End

Edit - And soon to lose Roenick

Niki Taylor, the supermodel...http://www.nikitaylor.com/index2.html

Small correction though, I think they are dating and not married...

Well, hype is only in the names. Their defensemen pickups are going to be interesting since they are of the big, lugging types (i.e. Hatcher) and so, how they play in the new open-ice system has yet to be seen...

And Forsberg...although quite the pickup IMHO can't stay healthy and we don't forget how he pulled a Ricky Williams awhile back on his team too...

When was the last time a team won the cup with a so-so goaltender? Actually probly in 98 when Detroit won with Osgood but certainly no other time in the last 25 years.

That's Ranford not Rantford.

But, quite true. A hot goalie exactly what it takes to go deep into the playoffs...even the losers of the Finals like Cgy and recently Anaheim with the great play of Giguere and Kiprusoff...

Alot of talk of Kariya & Selanne to LA.

Looks as if Palffy isn't going to sign with LA. If this is true then Kariya & Salanne w/ newly acquired Demitra is great!

As far as Roenick goes I find it hard to believe the Kings will trade their great young prospects for him.

Thats just wrong

I'm surprised he left actually. If I was a free agent my main priorities would be winning and then playing close to home. Looks like Scott factored neither into his decesion.

There is a manager who walked over to the cube beside me and is talking about how the leafs are probably waiting for Niedermayer. Should I break the news to him and expose the fact that I have been surfing the web all morning?

I'm not sure whats funnier, that your manager actually thought the Leafs had a shot at Niedermeyer or that you've been surfing the net all morning.

There are 7 million reasons why he decided to play there. I know he's always wanted to play with his brother, but at the cost of winning?

I am really wondering how Giguere will play with the new rule for goaltending equipment. Ducks fans...you will now see a smaller goaltender. Burke's teams do not play the trap, so I have a feeling that he'll be lit up.

I think Roenick is in the last year of his contract. Anyone confirm this?

If so, if he re-signs with the Kings then the future considerations could be substantial.

I answered my own question.
The Flyers lured him away from Phoenix in 2001 with a five-year, $37.5 million US contract.

Yup. And of course, in MY world, I could've sworn that Forsberg and Modano did NOT spurn the Hawks and sign with other teams for less money.
