When asked about why he drafted Brayden Scheen Dean Lombardi apparently answered something about pissing off Brian Burke. While I have no doubt they drafted Scheen because they wanted him I bet he enjoyed pissing off big mouth Burke.

He made so much noise about moving up (This city was all about the Leafs moving up all of last week) and then he did nothing. Makes you wonder why he couldn't have just kept his mouth shut.

So, any details on how and why the supposed deal of Kessel for Kaberle went doink...?

^There was apparently a miscommunication as to which draft pick would be included from the Leafs. I think Boston was under the impression that it was the 7th pick and the Leafs were offering a 2nd rounder. Something like that.

I think it was the Leafs who were expecting Kessel AND a pick, not the other way around. And rightfully so IMO.

I just heard JP Barry on the radio and the Canucks did not come close to matching that 12 year offer. they won't go past 5 years. So chances are...the Sedins will be on the market tomorrow.

Not that I don't still think they're overrated. He was actually comparing them to Zetterberg.

I hope Burke doesn't do something stupid as far as the Sedins go.

Depends on where you read but I think Burke is likely going to be relatively quiet come the FA signing period. He doesn't have the pressure of other GM's with a noose hanging over their heads to make a "splash"...Then again, who knows. Burke's not a Euro-player fan...so, even though he drafted the Sisters, I'm thinking he'll likely stay away from Hossa, Havlat and the Twins?

Your best post ever.

And I've heard Burke argue against him not being a fan of Europeans. Apparently his drafting and trading stats don't back that argument up.

Depends on what Tallon et al want to do with Barker...I have a feeling Walker's coming back. So, Barker may be trade bait. The guy they drafted from what I read is kinda a Barker clone and so, it may mean that the latter's days are numbered as a Hawk...?

And then, there's Sopel. Here's hoping there are some takers for him...

Scuderi, Fedotanko, Guerin, Adams, Sykora, Satan, Gill, Boucher, Zigomanis, and Garon are the most noteable.

Pens have already signed Guerin and Adams, Sykora and Fedotanko are expected to be signed soon. Scuderi will def be gone for more money, I know they won't sign Satan again, doubtful for Boucher either. I'd like them to sign Gill again, but who knows with how close to the cap they are

Post Gomez Traded to Habs

From TSN...

Getting a jump on the free agent market, the Montreal Canadiens moved to secure their centre ice position, making a big trade with the New York Rangers Tuesday.

The Canadiens acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defencemen Dpug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.

Gomez, 29, is coming off a down season for the Rangers, finishing with 58 points, his lowest total since 2002-2003.

"We are extremely pleased to have acquired a player of the caliber of Scott Gomez. He is an outstanding playmaker and an excellent skater. Having won the Stanley Cup twice with the New Jersey Devils, he brings to our team a lot of playoff experience. Scott is an elite player who will certainly contribute to the success of our team for years to come" said Canadiens GM Bob Gainey.

A two-time Stanley Cup winner with the New Jersey Devils, Gomez was a blockbuster free agent signing for the Rangers in the summer of 2007. Gomez is signed through 2013-2014, at a salary cap hit of more than $7.35-million, so he represents a significant investment.

In 706 career games, Gomez has 148 goals, 430 assists and 578 points, adding 81 points in 114 career playoff games.

Higgins, a 26-year-old restricted free agent winger, also struggled in 2008-2009, scoring a career-low 23 points in 57 games as he missed a combined 25 games with hand and groin injuries.

Prior to last season, however, Higgins recorded three straight seasons of at least 20 goals and he'll be a more economical option for the Rangers as he earned $1.7-million last season.

As for the Gomez trade... I wonder how many drinks Gainey had before signing off on that.

How's everybody doing??? Have been wicked busy lately so haven't been on here much at all, I'm sure I missed a ton from the Cup Finals all the way through the draft speculation.

As far as the Bruins Kessel thing goes, what I heard was that Chiarelli was expecting the seventh overall pick in this year's draft and Kaberle for Kessel and a future first rounder. I guess Chiarelli thought him and Burke had agreed on the deal and right when the Leafs were on the clock Burke went over to the B's table and told Chiarelli that they will talk about the trade after they pick their player. What??? And here Chiarelli was sitting getting ready to go up to the stage and make the pick...what if he went up there before the Leafs were announced to be on the clock....sorry about the lengthy paragraph haha.

$7.8 Million for a player that has 16 goals the past 2 seasons and 13 the year before that. He's a great player but man that's a Lot of money in the cap era.

Great move by the Rangers. They need some young kids and to rebuild a bit.

Hear the latest on Heatly?

There was a deal in place with the Oilers that included Cogliano, Penner and Smid going to Ottawa but Heater declined to waive his no trade clause.
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283382

He really fucked the Sens coming out publicly about not wanting to be in Ottawa. They'll never get as much in return this way.

Yup...interesting. Although, Heatley is supposedly "sleeping on it" to decide.

Obviously, Edmonton's going to get screwed again by a star player...how many is that now? Pronger, Hossa, Niedermayer, Jagr...

Didn't realize how much room the Canadians had..

Obviously the Rangers made the move yesterday to free up some cap space. Who are they after?

Rangers have a lot of youth that require salary bumps if they want to keep them. They sent out qualifying offers to 5 players. But knowing Sather he will try to make some big free agent splash, they are in dire need of a serious scorer. There is still a chance for Heatley, and the word in Rangerland is that offers could be going to Gaborik, Hossa, and/or Havlat.

They sent offers to Callahan, Dunbinsky, Korpikoski, Potter, and Boyle.

Also free agents are Orr, Sjostrom, and Betts.
