Interesting. Interesting.

Loyalty is hard to come-by these days and it's nice to see a player in his prime committed to a team for the rest of his career...
...of course, trades happen when they reach past their late 30s.

Back in the day when the Blue Jays were good they would not give out a contract longer than 3 years, didn't matter who you were. That helped them stay good for a very long time. Too bad owners can't show the same restraint today.

And with a cap, you're handcuffing yourself. If it somehow goes back down to 35 mill what the hell are you going to do? Can't trade them either.

These long contracts are going to kill the NHL if it keeps up.
In NFL they do long contracts to superstars so that the numbers look bigger, they backload them, and they aren't guaranteed. NHL as well as MLB and NBA are guaranteed contracts.
DiPietro is a walking injury, if he can't stay healthy when hes young, how is he going to stay healthy in 5-7 years? I would hope teams include buy-out options into these contracts.
NHL is EXTREMELY weak financially. These contracts will come back to bite.

I also couldn't justify a 12-15yr guaranteed contract to the likes of Crosby, Ovechkin etc. One real bad concussion and you're on the books for 10m a yr for the next decade even if hes a shell of himself.

Prognosis not Good for Cancer-Stricken Burns
Story from CNNSI...
Pat Burns was scouting a hockey game Tuesday night, which means it was another good day for the former NHL coach.
The 56-year old Burns recently confirmed he has lung cancer and knows the long-term outlook is "not good" in his third battle against the disease. The New Jersey Devils' scout, however, remains upbeat and is taking full advantage of each day.
"Right now, I'm just enjoying the time left. That's what I'm trying to do," Burns said before New Jersey played Tampa Bay. "The crying and everything, that's all finished. That's over. I told my family, that's it. We've done all that. Let's just enjoy what we have here."
Burns had chemotherapy treatments the first two times he had cancer, but is not planning to have the treatment this time.
"Maybe something new will come out. This is my third bout with it," Burns said. "I've had colon cancer before. I've had liver cancer before. Now it's proceeded into the lungs. It becomes a situation where, how much you do want to treat things. It's the treatment that's tough. I did through 21/2 year of chemo. I've had two major surgeries."
Burns has been examined at several topflight cancer centers and checks in with his doctors at least once every two weeks. He still plays golf and rides his motorcycle, but his link with hockey is key.
"I love working for New Jersey," Burns said. "They've been great to me. They've supported me. (General manager) Lou (Lamoriello) is a Godsend for me because he's looked after me, and I know I can stay close to hockey."
Burns was 501-350-161-14 in 14 seasons as an NHL coach with Montreal, Toronto, Boston and New Jersey. He led New Jersey to the 2002-03 Stanley Cup title and is a three-time Jack Adams Award winner as the NHL's top coach.
"I'm not going to stop," Burns said. "You've got to get up with a purpose in life."

chips and smokes, lets go
I would also add Datsyuk to the list. The guy does it at both ends of the rink. I was VERY impressed from what I saw of him in last year's playoffs and he has kept it up this year.

Hopefully the Sens can muster up a few wins with the games at hand they have. The Leafs are brutal and I'd be surprised to see them finish outside the bottom 5.

I don't want it gone, but I do want to see less of it. Sometimes a good old fashioned dust up is the way to settle things but these guys are doing it just for the hell of it most times.
And then there's the whole playoff argument.....
Maybe start giving game misconducts for fighting and 1 game suspensions if they happen in the last 5 minutes of a game or if the lead is more than 5 goals to avoid end of game and blowout stupidity.

I wouldn't say for the hell of it as I'm sure there's something that pisses them off..
But honestly I haven't seen many fights where they are fighting for the hell of it. Yesterday Godard went up against Orr but that stemmed from the last game.
What is Godard going to do let Orr fvck with Sid for 2 games? But if you saw the opening faceoff of the game yesterday you wouldn't know what happened last game.
And what happens when they don't fight? Well Orr fvcks with Sid so Godard goes after Gomez.
I don't know the answer but it's a vicious cycle.

Goons go after each other to try and spark their team. It happens quite often.
I don't have the answers Jonsei, but if you start throwing guys out of games you'll see less fighting, more meaningful fighting. If that's what you want to see.
I think it should be left up to the players. If they want fighting, let them kill each other. They haven't been the ones coming out against fighting so I guess they're fine with it.

Good point.. But there has been more talk of getting rid of bums like Avery, Cooke, Ruutu etc.. I'd rather see that crap gone then fighting. Cheap shots get players hurt.

Most of these guys are grown MEN, if they feel the need to fight, they know the consequences (getting hurt or death) let them deal with it on their own.

Only fighting that really bothers me is:
Player A crushes player B with a beautiful clean bodycheck. Player C then proceeds to jump player A and start a fight.
Somebody is not winning the Calder this year because of that exact scenario.

Or player B then starts the fight. These guys need to grow thicker skins and learn to accept getting hit is part of the game.

If players can't handle a clean hit then they can continue to enjoy stick infractions and cheapshots.
