WOW ...end to the match before PKS. YES Suarez got a red BUT HE GAVE HIS TEAM A CHANCE rather than what would have been an obvious goal AND the guy missed the PK. EPIC!

Suarez KNEW that if he let the ball in then Ghana would win the game, so he knew he had to keep the ball out of the net at all costs and the ONLY way he could do it is to just punch it out. Yes, some might say it isn't unsportsmanlike BUT he gave his team another opportunity to stay in the game with the PK instead of the goal. AND he obviously made the right choice because the guy missed the PK and Uruguay won the game. Suarez made a good professional move imo... you could say he let Uruguay win it.

And yea it is just a straight red card so he gets kicked out of this game and misses the next game vs Netherlands....

I think Netherlands should beat Uruguay no problem...

And btw Forlan has been amazing all cup; this game his passes and deadball situations were spot on; one of the top 3 players of the cup for me.

Yeah it is pretty cheap, but other than a PK there is nothing that can be done other than giving them the goal anyway; hmm maybe they should look into that, but I dunno, it just leaves too much to interpretation with the refs and based on some terrible calls this WC, I don't think I'd want that.

I thought I'd never see something like that, and the other team to miss the PK on top of that.... Unbelievable; good defense by the cross bar though!

technically no, thats why he was red carded.

morally? yes, and i've seen it first hand.. it gave my highschool a birth to the semi-finals in state that eventually led to the state championship.

it happens more often than you think in big game situations..

yeah you could say that.

something like this is the equivalent of a goal tending call in NBA but at least in the NBA, the basket counts.

But its a tough call either way, no Suarez shouldn't have hand balled, but then Ghana should have scored on the PK, (one on one with the GK, doesn't get much easier than that). Then if you look at it the other way had the goal counted, then there wouldn't be a need for a PK in the first place.

But yeah, doing things like that can be abused. See an obvious goal in the closing minutes, no problem, knock it out with your hand and take your chances on the PK; what is there really to lose in the closing stages of a match? I guess I can't blame him too much, had he not hand balled, then Uruguay would be going home; and I'm sure had he just let the ball go right by him, his team would have probably kicked his a$$.

Hey it is FIFA's rules. Their rules state that if a player does something like Suarez did he gets a red card and the other team gets a PK.

A lot of people would rather have it as a red card and a goal awarded to the other team. But then again we all know FIFA will never change their rules so if ANYONE is to blame about that ending, it is FIFA. Suarez knew the rules and used them to his and his team's advantage. My hats off to him...

disagree.

shoot, if that's the case, i will go back to korea vs argentina and knee kick the shit out of messi and higuain to a point, they just can't play the whole game or two.... 2 red cards enough then, right?

if you incorporated a rule that tried to prevent this.. you would have to establish what is the line between "intentional and unintentional handballs"

then you would have to establish the line between shots/crosses/passes near the goal that are handballed...

there is too much that isnt being discussed here that make the reasons why this cant happen..

by the way, a missed pk (not blocked) is an almost non-existant stat...it happens.. but most world class players are over 90-95% on making them..

the handball sucked for ghana..but you HAVE to make pk's.. they are gimme's...

they take further measure where its needed..

in your case, they would more than likely ban you from international play for good...

a handball warrants a red, and he got what he deserved.. fate was in ghana's hands after that point.

It sucks for Ghana and I feel bad for them; but a rule change like this would would just complicate things even more and like I said before it just leaves more stuff up for interpretation by the refs...I certainly don't want that.

Bottom line; if you get a PK, then just make it!

it's taking advantage of the rules. but it's within the rules.

it happens every now and then. it's just now it's on a grander scale.

personally, i think suarez did the right thing.

Yes, I would agree with you there, but there aren't many players that wouldn't have done the exact same thing in that situation. I hated that it came down to this, it was a really good game for both teams.

I was going for Ghana.

he will be viewed as a hero by many and in his country.

only ghana/african nation fans will hate him.

think of your favorite player in the world... he too, would do this to save his team from elimination just 2 games from the world cup finals..

Perhaps CONMEBOL keeps their 8 spots, but let the bottom 2 teams have a playoff against the bottom two teams in UEFA or CAF for some wild card. Similar to what OFC does.
agree. but didn't CAF get an extra spot since one is a host? i would think they'd lose one or have a playoff qualifier for 2014.

i wouldn't judge him from this cup. like rooney, kaka, messi (to some extent. but otherwise, i think he's done very well. just unlucky with great saves from keepers), torres, etc, he definitely had a poor display.

but portugal play very defensively and he had no support in attack. portugal have no strikers that are worthy of playing in this level of competition, and his midfield besides meireles were piss poor. simao was too slow, danny was out of position, deco was uninspired and looked apathetic. it was all on ronaldo. and when he got the ball, he was crowded by defenders.
