And yea the injuries are piling up to all the star players. Diego Milito sprained his ankle or something during Argentina's training, Pirlo got some calf injury during his training and may not play, not to mention Mikel and pretty much the whole fucking CHelsea squad! AHHH wtf is going on..

Drogba's arm in a cast, headed back to training camp... dunno when or how much he will train but would be awesome if he played in the Portugal game
And Robben's injury not as bad as expected.
Looks like I won't be finalizing my bracket til the last second after I get the very latest on all the injury update statuses.

what if the USA beat England on saturday?
what are the odds?
and what does that equate to in american sports like the NFL or NBA...like an 0-15 raiders beating a 15-0 giants?

The odds are greatly for England. IMO England is heavily overrated. Yes, they have great players but on the big stage they just can't produce great results. I expect them to get out of the group but after that it depends who they play...
In American Sports... well honestly I dunno if there is anything like it. Since England is one of the 'favorites' to win it (depending who you ask), but the USA is a good team too... beat Spain and almost beat Brazil last year. So... I think it would be something like last year's Texans - USA (upandcomers with some standout players, not given as much attention as they deserve) vs last year's Vikings - England (great players in every position, lots of media hype, just can't make it past that final hurdle)

What Would Don Draper Do?
in my opinion, it's not that big of a loss.
he's a great player, and possibly one of the finest england has produced. but he hasn't been the same player as he was 3 years ago. back and groin problems have really limited him. when he's fit, he's one of the best in the world. he's exceptional at reading the game and he's brilliant at playing the ball out of the back, which sets him apart from the rest of england's defenders.
however, ledley king, who i assume will fill in for rio, is more than a capable backup. ONLY worry i'd have with ledley is that he's just as crocked up as rio. he can't train at all. for his club, he just plays matches without training because his knees can't take it. it's amazing that he's still playing, really.
at the same time, it says a lot about him that capello still called him into the squad. a lot of folks believe that if ledley had stayed healthy, he's a better player than john terry.
with all that said, i'm absolutely gutted for rio. i've been a big fan of his since his west ham united days.
overall, i don't think england will miss rio as much as they would if rooney or say, lampard or gerrard, were to go out. there's depth in CB. ledley's condition isn't ideal. who knows whether or not he can play 6 games with few rest in between. but he's more than a capable player.

a lot of the england fans i post with on another forum are very realistic and realize they have a chance to do well, but the runup has been very weird and unsatisfying.
they're in a weird funk right now. but during qualifying, they looked really good, and capello finally figured out a way to make the most of lampard and gerrard.
however, i think they're in that second group behind brazil and spain.

Holy sh-t JMT you should be doing color commentary for ESPN instead of that yahoo Lalas
Thanks to you and IMJ for taking the time to explain futbol to us noobz who are fans during Euros and the World Cup.
I was in Madrid when fans where rioting after Real won Euros and in Florence when fans were rioting after Italia lost to Brazil in the WC finals so I'm down with the soccer revelry though

no prob.
it's very exciting, and it's cool to see others post in this thread.
haven't been around AZ much since i started a new job and can't post at work ( :thumbsdow) so it's a nice surprise when i see this thread at a whopping 104 posts.

well, in our lifetime, this literally is the first time we're expected to advance out of the group stages.
1990: we were practically a group of amateurs
1994: was just a pleasant surprise. and a hell of a ride.
1998: ugh.
2002: we did well, but i dunno if we were favored to advance. i think portugal and maybe poland were.
2006: one of the groups of death with czech republic, italy, and ghana. there was A LOT of hype, but realistically, advancing was going to be very difficult.

Spain is hyped up just like brazil and other powerhouses (rightfully so).. but as we saw last year, they can be beaten. it takes smart play and a hell of an effort.. but they can be beaten like every other team.
this world cup will be an exciting one i think. i really wont be suprised to see some wild cards go deep.

Burning Brakes
Why's everyone like england so much? They haven't won anything at the world cup since 1966 and they're no stronger than before this time around, they'll be lucky to advance out of their group. I predict Slovenia tops the group and USA takes 2nd.

the media hypes them up, but that's what they do every tournament until the team fails. then the media like to point fingers and sell more papers.
honestly, the real knowledgable fans know that this england team isn't the best squad out there. however, i think they're still the favorite to win the group.
sure, they haven't won anything since '66, but to be fair, there are a lot of things to like this time around. i think most england supporters are just hoping for at least a semifinal berth.

West Ham World Cup Winners 1966.
With Maradonna doing his absolute best to screw up the Argies, I think it's going to be a good year.
Don't get me wrong, I love everything USA. However, I feel no attachment to USA football. Not since all the players from USA '94 left. I feel I identify more with the England squads for the past ten years. Plus, I'm a full-fledged and unashamed Anglophile.

England is always overhyped, so I always enjoyed watching them crash and burn in the WC. But for some reason, I think England will do very very well this time. Part of it is because of Capello, and the other part is how screwed up the typical favorites are (Italy, Argentina, Brazil, etc.).
To me, the favorites to win the WC this year are the Netherlands and England.

is it single elimination?...like if you lose once you're out for good?
And let's say that England beat us...are they going to be talking shit to Americans for the next 4 years?..or do they know almost all Americans don't care about soccer and the loss isn't that big of deal..and they would know that if they played us in a normal sport like baseball, basketball, football, etc we would wipe the fucking floor with them?...what approach would they be taking?...just need to know if i have to beat a limeys ass in come 3 months when I have to go to england for a week and be subjected to that horrible food and really ugly women
