Didn't see it either, I was following the BBC's live text commentary. Will have to check the highlights in the evening sports broadcast. Apparently two French players were offside, on top of the handball that led to the goal.

France vs Ireland - Oh my it was a BLATANT handball by Henry. He even moved his arm in the way to stop the ball from going out of bounds. Ireland got ROBBED! Although France are a known powerhouse team with lots of history, imo they do NOT deserve a spot in the finals based on the way they've played the past couple years... like they don't even care half the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2s8iGHllWw

Portugal vs Bosnia - As soon as Portugal scored I knew they clinched their spot and I'm glad because they really are a great team and the cup is better with them in it, and of course one of the world's best players Ronaldo playing.

Greece vs Ukraine - I did NOT expect this, especially since it was @ Ukraine.

Russia vs Slovenia - Most surprising imo. Russia is a top 10 team in the world imo and they deserve a spot in the finals, but I guess this just wasn't their day.

Algeria vs Egypt - very competitive game but Egypt couldn't finish their chances and Algeria deserved the win imo; but doesn't matter because Ivory Coast has the best chance of all African teams to win it.

Uruguay vs Costa Rica - I think Uruguay will pull through, especially since they have the away goal advantage.

yea, looks like a blatant and intentional handball to me.

pretty sad that the refs and the linesmen didn't seen it.

soccer really needs some kind of video replay.

^ I bet Beckham and Nistelrooy will play. They both have tons of experience and can still deliver the goods for their respective countries.

Henry should be banned from the finals for bringing the game into disrepute! What a cheater.

He should be. Whether FIFA has the balls to actually do so is another story.

It's easy to sit down and commiserate with your opponents after the game when you've won, when the right thing to do is tell the referee immediately that the ball came off your hand TWICE.

Post match bans based on video replays are routinely given out for such circumstances, so I don't expect Henry to get away clean. Even Zidane and Materrazzi received post match bans after WC06, despite both players being effectively retired. FIFA needs to come out hard on this, because it was a flagrant offence against fair play and sportsmanship. But I agree with you, FIFA will probably chicken out and hand him just a one match ban.

i think beckham will make the squad. he's not first choice anymore, but he's hell bent on making the team. playing at milan again should please capello.

i'd like to see RVN return to the netherlands team. he just needs to stay healthy.

as for henry, i doubt FIFA or UEFA will ban him. he says he even told the ref, but the ref said "you're not the ref."

i really feel for ireland. i really wanted to see them make the finals. i think the bigger crime is UEFA's decision to seed the playoffs even though they said they wouldn't.

i don't believe in karma, but it's really too bad for ireland because i don't think this france team are going to do much in SA. and depending on the draw, i wouldn't be surprised if they're out in the first round. tactically, the manager is clueless, and it's so apparent now that it was zidane and the players that carried the team to the final in 2006. they've been on a slippery slope since then, and i have no idea why domenech is still there. it's a shame because that is a really, really good team.

As much as I hate the call and France I gotta say Henry is in a shitty situation right now. He make a dumb move that he probably thinks is gotta get called. Anybody that has played any sport would do the same thing, you don't tell the ref and let down your team and country. Most players however would not admit to doing it. He took responsibility for it and I think it should be on FIFA to make this situation right.

I don't think that's what happened. What I read is that he talked to an Irish player after the match and admitted that he hand balled. The Irish player didn't blame him and said that it wasn't his fault since he wasn't the ref. If he had told the ref, then he wouldn't have celebrated his win, and I'm sure the ref would have disallowed the goal.

The fact is, I have never seen a player at this level ever admit a hand ball goal. That's why FIFA needs to come down hard.

i'm gonna agree with you.

1. he is in a situation. he's been perhaps one of the best players in this generation and of the last 10 years. i've a man united supporter, but i've thought he's been a genius of a player at his time at arsenal. i remember times when i'd watch him and just stand and applaud. his reputation has really been sullied. but i do think when he retires, most people are going to remember him for his brilliance (unless he does the same thing in a world cup final like maradona).

2. it was a bone-headed move, but i've done the same thing before whether it's basketball, soccer, football, etc. instincts do play a part in it, and i've always kept playing until the ref blew a whistle. and at that point in the game, you're just desperate and exhausted.

3. if he did indeed own up to it to the ref, then credit to him. the refs have to be blamed too.

PS

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...up2010&cc=5901

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) have lodged a formal complaint with FIFA over the controversial World Cup play-off defeat to France and have urged world football's governing body to replay the match.
Could be a very interesting next few days...

it was after the game....when he sat next to dunne on the field.
After the game, when Henry acknowledged that he had handled the ball, he said he had also confessed to Richard Dunne, and the Ireland defender, who reassured the France striker that he was not the referee.
he also said this after the game:
“I will be honest, it was a hand ball,” Henry said after the game. “But I’m not the ref.”

It would take something extraordinary to replay the match, although that is the moral thing to do. If a rematch is granted, it would set a dangerous precedent.

I also agree with what Trap said, they shouldn't have played extra time. A home-away series is unfair to the home side for the second leg.

yea i really doubt that they'll replay the match. logistically, it's just hard to do.

i never thought about not having the overtime period in the second leg. bottom line, though, is that even if you go straight to penalties, there's no real "good" way to end a home/away tie or a knockout match.

i'm a supporter of penalty shootouts (even though i agree with its faults) because you can't expect players to keep playing forever. the game has to stop at some point.

but i never thought about skipping OT and going straight to a shootout.

Yea of all people to fuck up, I did not expect it to be Donovan. But then again, there were a lot of shitty shots right down the middle to the keeper. The goalie save on Beckerman's pk was best imo.

Oh ya and that Tot vs Wigan score ...sad...

sucks to lose in a shootout, but it happens.

and the best players miss. remember the 08 CL final when ronaldo, anelka, and terry missed?

it's probably the worst way to lose a game. (unless you're irish.)

Liverpool and Barca both possibly going out tonight..

Rubin Kazan needs a win today to knock Barca out, and it's tied at nil at the moment in the second half.

They're tried adding a couple extra refs in some leagues.. that would definitely be a good start.

I don't understand why people are talking about the possibility of a rematch. Blatant or not, that's just how sports are. Plenty of shitty calls decide games in all sports - you can't replay the game.

when i mentioned video replays, i meant for certain circumstances. mostly goals. whether or not the ball passed the line, or in the case of henry, if the ball was handled. those are situations where replay can work.

i don't want to see a replay on every call. i understand the nature of the game and its continuity.

but for goals, i think it warrants a look. teams spend up to several minutes on celebrations anyways, especially on goals at the end of the game.

Congrats. Messi deserves it. I saw him play vs Real this past weekend and he was literally dribble in circles around the Real players lol.

So, World Cup drawing pots are out - FIFA chose to base the seedings upon their October 2009 FIFA world rankings. That France have been placed into the general pot of European teams may be seen as punishment for their controversial win over Ireland in the World Cup play-offs. Pots 2-4 are based purely on a geopgraphical basis and there is no seeding to them.

Pot 1
Argentina
Brazil
England
Germany
Italy
Netherlands
South Africa
Spain

Pot 2
Australia
Japan
North Korea
South Korea
Honduras
Mexico
United States
New Zealand

Pot 3
Algeria
Cameroon
Ivory Coast
Ghana
Nigeria
Chile
Paraguay
Uruguay

Pot 4
Denmark
France
Greece
Portugal
Serbia
Slovakia
Slovenia
Switzerland

Doesn't look too good for USA lol... with their luck they will of course get a top seeded team from pot 1, probably a good African team, and maybe a weak'er' but still good European team. Should be interesting...

I wonder which will be the next 'group of death'. Drawing is Friday!
