Brian Griese to start over Ugly Rexy
When the Bears resume practice Wednesday to prepare for their Sunday game against the Lions, Brian Griese indeed will replace Rex Grossman at quarterback, a team source confirmed Tuesday.
The NFL Network was reporting the same thing.
Bears coach Lovie Smith had been coy about the quarterback situation Monday, saying "Will Rex Grossman start Sunday? Well, our evaluation process is going on right now. And if you come out to practice Wednesday, you'll have a better idea of who will be starting at all positions."
Apparently, it will be Griese.
Griese's last start was Oct. 16, 2005, a 27-13 win over Miami when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That same season, Griese threw for 302 yards in a 17-13 win over Detroit.
In six games with the Bears last season, Griese completed 18 of 32 passes for 220 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His passer rating was 62.0, but Griese's career rating is 84.5.
Here's what Smith said Monday when asked about Griese: "How much confidence do I have [in Griese]? I have confidence in our entire football team. Brian is a part of that. Even after you have a loss like that, at the same time, we all feel bad. We should. But as far as confidence in our football team, I have a lot still. Brian is a part of that."

Decent QBs don't hold Rex's clipboard.

I always thought Griese never lived up to his potential.

Griese's job is to manage the game...and if anything, he'll give the Bears a better shot of winning. And that's all one can hope for if they are a fan of the team.

The Bears have other "mediocre" QBs like Griese and Orton that can get them through the season, possibly into the playoffs too.
They need to consider the value-add of Leftwich now as opposed to getting a top-tier QB next year or one in the '08 draft.

I might consider giving you Glenn Holt and his butter fingers for those losers.

Probably not, I bet that the Bears front office still believes he's the future at QB of the Bears franchise. How old is he anyway 26?

i think the biggest reason they stuck with him was because of the money they invested in him, not to mention the fact that griese has been on four teams in the last ten years. at this point, whether anyone wants to admit it, orton is the better choice. hell at this point, he has as much experience as rex. when he led us to the playoffs his numbers were not great, but the bears were really only trying to salvage that season when sexy rexy went down unexpectedly.
the bears problem is that they always pick up players that they have no intention of using NOW, and by the time they get around to them, they arent worth the time or effort....we have always been a running team, but if you dont have a STABLE quaterback that will keep defenses honest, youre gonna be toast!
Get ready for a long season....the running game is a travesty, and thats going to make it open season on any quarterback in our system
I for one am a true bears fan (win or lose) and will tune in every sunday, and attend my usual two games this season. God willing we wont be that much of an embarrassment!!
i hope i'm wrong, but its just my .02

This is the same team that demotes Alex Brown for the sake of "open competition" but hands the jobs to Grossman and Benson without question. WTF...?

Either way, management told Lovie or Lovie just went ahead to play those two. I somehow think it is management. is it too much to ask for a decent QB and a decent RB; not great mind you, just good/decent to make a run with the defense in place.

And equally unforgiveable that they allowed the QB situation to rot into the current situation. If they had an open competition in training camp, at least Griese would've had more reps. He was absolutely out of sync in today's game. And with the opposing D knowing that Benson is a fumbler and unreliable, they'll continue to just tee off at blitzing the QB because they know Chicago can't run.
So...it goes AGAIN back to Angelo for deciding to rid the Bears of Jones.

Yes, and some blame goes to Bensen for being that way. All the accolades and records in college and none of it has been seen in the Pros.

I never understood why the Bears got rid of Jones. It always appeared to me like they wanted him to fail so they could dump him and have Benson be the main back, almost as if the Bears had something against Jones.

well it doesn't look like Griese did much better today... he scored but he was picked off a few times too and most importantly they lost. Oh well, guess im just going to soley rest my faith in UW being my team this fall, now that the bears probably wont beat GB, ND is 0-1 billion and the White Sox had a miserable season filled with injuries.
