Brewers sign Hoffman to 1 year/$6 mil
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Career saves leader Trevor Hoffman and the Milwaukee Brewers announced their $6 million, one-year deal Tuesday after the reliever passed a physical.
``He brings to our club the closer we need for us to continue our pursuit of a World Series,’’ general manager Doug Melvin said.
The 41-year-old righty, who had pitched for San Diego since 1993, has 554 saves in 930 relief appearances over his 16-year career.
Hoffman went 3-6 with a 3.77 ERA and 30 saves in 34 opportunities last season. The six-time All-Star can earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on games finished.

Orioles acquire outfielder Pie
Interesting...I wonder if this hoarding of pitching prospects is Hendry's plan to re-try and obtain Peavy from the Padres?
From ESPN...
From ESPN...
Despite being rated as the top prospect in the Cubs' farm system in 2006 and 2007, outfielder Felix Pie never made his mark in Chicago. Now he'll get a chance to make a big-league impact in Baltimore, instead.
The Cubs traded Pie to the Orioles on Sunday for left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson and minor league pitcher Henry Williamson.
Pie, 23, played in 130 major league games for the Cubs the past two seasons. In 2008 he hit .241 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 43 games. Baseball America rated Pie as the Cubs' No. 1 prospect in both 2006 and 2007.
Pie has a .299 career batting average in 628 minor league games. He was signed by the Cubs as an undrafted free agent in 2001 and made his major league debut in April 2007.
Olson, 25, was 9-10 with a 6.65 ERA in 26 starts for Baltimore last season. In 33 career starts for the Orioles, Olson was 10-13 with a 6.87 ERA.
Williamson was the Orioles' 14th round selection in the 2007 amateur draft. He went 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA last season in 20 games at the Class A level.
MASN Sports reports that Pie's acquisition means that Luke Scott will get the bulk of the starts at designated hitter and Aubrey Huff will get several starts at first base.
Orioles team president Andy McPhail, who came to Baltimore from the Cubs' organization, likes what he's getting with Pie.
"Outstanding speed, plus arm, plus defender, he's hit his entire minor league career and he's won at almost every place he's been," McPhail told MASN. "I know the kid. He has great makeup, a great work ethic. He's devoted to becoming the best player he can be. And we'll give him every opportunity to see if he can hit in the majors, which we think he can.
"We said we were really going to emphasize defense, and it's hard to imagine a better defensive outfield in the game than Pie, [Adam] Jones and [Nick] Markakis. It really gives us three center fielders."

here is some interesting number for Howard
• Is Ryan Howard worth the $18 million he's asking in arbitration? Via FanGraphs, here are Howard's salaries and his real values since 2006: <!-- begin table -->
<table class="tableheadFixWidth" width="300" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"> <tbody><tr class="stathead"> <td colspan="3">Ryan Howard</td> </tr> <tr class="colhead" valign="top"> <td>
</td> <td>Salary ($)</td> <td>Value ($)</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow" valign="top"> <td>2006</td> <td>400,000</td> <td>25,700,000</td> </tr> <tr class="evenrow" valign="top"> <td>2007</td> <td>900,000</td> <td>17,100,000</td> </tr> <tr class="oddrow" valign="top"> <td>2008</td> <td>10,000,000</td> <td>14,100,000</td> </tr> <tr class="evenrow" valign="top"> <td>2008</td> <td>18,000,000</td> <td>?</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <!-- end table --> We're assuming Howard gets his $18 million, which would only continue a dramatically positive trend for him. The Phillies, though? It looks like they're about to pay Howard and the piper. (That said, I don't think Howard will get his $18 million. As David Pinto notes, by filing at $14 million, the Phillies already are offering "Albert Pujols numbers for less production.")

Manny turns down a 1 year 25 mil offer.
Ramirez turns down $25 million offer
Manny Ramirez | Dodgers
A Dodgers spokesman confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez has rejected a one-year offer of $25 million. According to the newspaper, team spokesman Josh Rawitch wrote an in e-mail late Monday night that agent Scott Boras notified general manager Ned Colletti of the decision. "We still want to sign Manny," Colletti told MLB.com ealier on Monday. "We still want to make him a Dodger. That hasn't changed." With less than two weeks before Spring Training starts, not much had changed between the Dodgers and Ramirez since the 2008 season ended. During the general managers Meetings in November, the Dodgers offered Ramirez two years at $45 million, plus a third-year option for $15 million. Ramirez never responded and the club withdrew that offer when the exclusive negotiating period expired November 15.

Ben Sheets to undergo elbow surgery
Sheets could have accepted Milwaukee's offer of arbitration back in december and made at least $11 million...now it looks like he'll miss most of the '09 season

The METS and Yankees have already spent a ton. Boston is out. LA is probably one of the only places that can afford to throw cash at him.

He's going to price himself out of baseball soon. I don't know how many other teams have the cash now with just a week before spring training officially begins.
