I heard last night on a local sports show about rumors of a trade between the Reds and White Sox....Homer Bailey for Jermaine Dye was the bulk of it.

You guys heard anything up there?

The Chicago Tribune says the two sides aren't close. The White Sox want more than a guy who went 0-6 in the minors last year.

Yeah, it sounded too good to be true.

Bailey was all hype anyways...sure he could blow fastballs past minor leaguer's but some how he was never able to develop any other pitches

^ Interesting rumors to say the least...there's also the supposed whispers that Jenks is on the trading block.

Cubs apparently close to acquiring Peavy from the Padres...

From Chicagosports...

The Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks have reached a point where it will be a stunner if the Cubs don’t acquire Peavy, who immediately would become the best pitcher on a staff that already boasts Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Rich Harden.

That’s because two general managers -– the Padres’ Kevin Towers and the Cubs’ Jim Hendry -- are working hard to make it happen. If it doesn’t happen, it’ll become one of the few trades -– maybe the first -- that couldn’t be made when BOTH general managers were motivated to get it done.

Towers told reporters on Monday that the Cubs were the only team he is continuing to talk to about Peavy and that making a Peavy trade was his full focus at the winter meetings. He then went out and proved it by working to facilitate a potentially four-team trade that would send Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia and Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring back pitchers Garrett Olson, J.A. Happ (the Northwestern product) and Sean Marshall for the Padres.

The key for that deal to work is for the Phillies or Orioles to take Jason Marquis, with the Cubs agreeing to eat some of his salary.

Would this be a good deal for the Cubs?

Getting Peavy unquestionably makes it a good deal, even though DeRosa could be missed. His departure would make the left-handed-hitting Mike Fontenot the second baseman, partially fulfilling Lou Piniella’s wish to become more balanced. The addition of a left-handed-hitting right fielder –- some reports now say Milton Bradley is at the top of their list –- would make Piniella very happy.

Peavy has turned in sub-3 earned run averages in four of the last five seasons, including a 2.85 mark last year. He’s been helped by Petco Park, sure, but overall he’s allowed only 315 hits in 397 innings the last two years. That figure doesn’t have much to do with Petco’s large dimensions.

It was down to the Dodgers and Twins.

It appears K-Rod will be headed for the Mets. Wow, if Santana goes 8 innings and K-Rod 1 inning for 30 starts next year the Mets will probably........

.....come in second next year.

I hadn't heard that. I know they are looking at the Rockies' Atkins and are looking to dump Delmon Young.

I also heard 40-year old Scott Erickson wants to pitch for the Twins again.

My current prediction for the NL East. I think the Phillies are going to regress a lot. I see a bad year for Rollins ahead, possible no Burrell, Moyer has to start to get hit hard at his age.

1 Mets
2 Braves
3 Phillies
4 Marlins
5 Nats

Does he still have that hideous mullet like when I was a kid? That should be a prerequisite.

That's how they look to be lining up talent-wise. But lately the Mets have become MLB's version of the Dallas Cowboys.

I'm actually very suprised at this. I know the Yanks tossed more many than anyone, but I really thought CC would want to stay in the NL and be able to swing the bat.

A bit suprising but it seems like no one (west coast teams) even offered up a proposal. Lets face it, for the $$ amount he was gonna leave on the table, however "insignificant" it seemed on paper, its still a huge chunk of change if youre spending it or receiving it.

Thinking back to GMaddux back in the 90's, he left NYY money to sign with ATL, it was only like ~$5MM? Does anyone remember?

They got rid of the fat. Guys like Willingham didn't help much. Jacobs was inconsistent. Olsen was good for a while but blew 9 saves. They've added more bullpen and the starters will now be 100% healthy barring any setbacks. Hanley was signed to a long term extension so he's going nowhere. Uggla may/may not go depending on his value. We need to build our defense as we already had great hitting. But it's true. We lost some guys and are replacing with less surefire guys. However guys like Maybin or Dallas McPherson show tons of promise and I'd rather work on them than some overpaid vet. Plus our set up guy will be our closer and we've seen how tough that can be.

The CC signing might come back to haunt the Yanks. How did CC do in the AL recently? Where and when did he dominate? After the trade to the NL of course!

Are you sure about that? You may want to go look what he did in the 2007 season and the beginning of the 2008 season.

No need to correct yourself when you do, we all already know.

Long term deals for pitchers never work out. Kevin Brown, Mike Hampton, Barry Zito, Denny Negal, etc. Maybe CC might be different.

I see your point to not pay a pitcher big bucks. There's usually 5 servicable guys in your organization ready to replace that stud. Then again I'm accustomed to not paying big salaries since I'm a Marlins fan. Some teams have no choice I guess.

When did we start talking abount long term deals? I thought we were talking about CC's performance in the AL.

But if you want to change to topic that's fine. I'll agree that hitters are statistically better long term, but you said never. I can prove you wrong very easily right off the top of my head.

Pedro Martinez (Red Sox), Mussina (Yankees), Petite (Yankees), Maddux (Braves), Glavine (Braves), Mariano (Yankees)

...it's the Yankees, overpaying is their M.O. and consistent pitching was their biggest weakness last year

I'm a Met fan, buddy...

I just hate when people talk about something about which they have no clue. Those "points" you were trying to make were not points. They were inaccuracies, plain and simple. Don't start trying to point at me as the bad guy because I called out your nonsense. Just admit you were wrong and move on.
