Which explains why a number of riders coasted up to Landis before the first mountain, imploring him not to attempt something so foolhardy. As Landis would later recall, "I just told 'em, Go drink some Coke, 'cause we're leaving on the first climb if you want to come along.'"

The link doesn't work.

But that sounds about right, which explains why he had such a large group with him for the first part.

He also went through 70 water bottles yesterday. the majority dumped on his head to cool himself off.

The headline in that morning's Dauphine, a local paper, had trumpeted, LANDIS OUT, "And that made me mad," he would later allow. Flashing a pissed off expression and pushing a bigger gear than anyone else in the field, Landis walked down a group of eleven breakaway riders who'd earlier escaped. Upon overtaking them, he did not spend a few moments in someone else's slipstream, taking a blow, as might have been expected. He rode to the front as if it were his birthright, took an absurdly long pull, which shed several lesser riders, then commenced negotiations. Was anyone interested in forming an alliance?

No takers. "Nobody wanted to work with me," he later recalled. Tant pis! As the French say. Too bad. Landis set about riding the entire group off his wheel. Patrik Sinkewitz of T-Mobile, advocating for the interests of team leader Andreas Kloden, hung around the longest, riding in Landis's slipstream for 70km, one of the most egregious examples of wheel-sucking parasitism in the annals of this sport.

I just REALLY, REALLY hope that the 8 seconds Landis lost in the Prologue doesn't come back to haunt him. I have a feeling that EVERY second is going to count.

Stage 17 Landis PowerTap Numbers

http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2006...lenlim_landis2

- 5 hours 23 minutes and 36 seconds.

- Covering 200.5 kilometers (130 km alone in the wind).

- At a speed of 37.175 km/hr.

- Averaging 281 watts when moving for the whole ride and 318 watts over the last two hours.

- Averaging 324 watts while pedaling for the whole ride and 364 watts over the last 2 hours.

- At an average cadence of 89 rpm.

- Transferring 5,456 Kjoules of energy to his Cycleops PowerTap.

- Taking, no joke, a total of 70 water bottles (480 ml each) from the car to keep himself cool and hydrated.

- Attacking about a quarter of the way up the Col des Saisies for 30 seconds at 544 watts, which settled into a 5-minute peak of 451 watts, which continued for 10 minutes at an average of power of 431 watts, and left everyone in his dust after 30 minutes at an average power of 401 watts.

- Spending 13.2% of his time or 43 minutes coasting like a rocket on the descents and another 60% between 4 to 7 watts per kilogram of body weight (aka, the pain cave).

- Holding onto 373 watts over the Col de Joux-Plane.

- Hitting a max speed of 83.7 km/hr (51.9 mph) and flying like a Phoenix on his way to the most incredible moment in sports I have ever witnessed.

No kidding. I was amazed that he put up a time nearly four minutes quicker than the next quickest rider. Amazing performance...

How does it feel to have another American win your beloved cycling race?

My apologies to Landis for counting him out after Stage 16.

I predict that 5 nanoseconds after he wins the French press will be screaming for a drug test

My thoughts exactly.

Freaking frenchies just will not be able to bear having an American win the Tour yet again.

During the tour the winner of the stage is tested right after crossing the line (why else do you think they walk into the trailer right after they get off the bike).
The 4 jersey wearers are tested after every stage that they hold the jersey, Yellow, Green, Polka Dot, and White.
and everyone else is randomly tested at least 3 times during the race.

Lance was the most tested athlete in history. in his 7 years he said he was tested over 200 times. (Every day he was in yellow) and randomly showing up at his house (Piss please).

That didn't stop them from accusing Lance so why would it stop them from accusing Landis?

True.

And as with any cheaters, the cheaters are almost always 2 steps in front of the detection methods.

As great as Lance was over the years, Landis's comeback in the last 4 stages might go down as one of the greatest in tour history. Phenomenal turnaround.

LeMond, Armstrong and now Landis. Sweet!

I was an Armstrong bandwagon fan. But now that I've witnessed the unbelievable effort Landis made "without" help from his team...I'm in true amazement.

He's wife is pretty cute too...much better than Sheryl Crow.

That was a great gesture on the part of the Peloton.

To allow Ekimov to lead them out on to the Champs-Elysées, an amazing 15 tours all of which he finished.

This little jewel is posted at the paceline website. who do you think is going to be joining the Discovery Channel team??

And because you're a faithful reader of this column, I'll tell you to look for a major signing announcement Tuesday morning, US time! It's big and you're gonna like it…

I think it could be Ullrich since he was fired by TMO...

I don't think it will be Ullrich, I think it will be Alexander Vinokourov, as his team is no longer as Astana-Würth pulled their sponsership and the team has disbanded.

He might have funding. but going with a team with the resources of Discovery might be too tempting, and they did go after him after last season.

Leipheimer leaving Gerolsteiner for Discovery
By VeloNews Interactive
This report filed July 25, 2006

Levi Leipheimer is leaving Gerolsteiner at the end of the season, and will sign for Discovery Channel, which is expected to confirm his signing later today.

According to Gerolsteiner's bike sponsor, Specialized, Leipheimer called the company after the Tour to announce his transfer to the Discovery Channel team effective January 1, 2007.

"My best results, wins at the Tour of Germany and Dauphiné Libéré, happened on my S-Works Tarmac SL, but Discovery made me an offer I could not refuse," he was quoted as saying, while further expressing his thanks for Specialized's support.

Gerolsteiner spokesman Mathias Wieland told www.Radsport-Aktiv.de: "We had agreed with Levi that we would sit down together after the Tour and make the decision. Levi wanted to know earlier, and told us that he was having discussions with other teams."

Leipheimer is expected to ride the August 1-9 Deutschland Tour, where he is the defending champion.

i posted it first and then deleted it when paceline took the link down.

i'm guessing that disco wanted an american to lead the team. levi is getting a little long in the tooth to be winning long stage races. don't think anyone over 33 has ever won the TdF.

interestingly the announcement doesn't state that he'll be the team leader.
