Looking to move to Socal from NY looking for contacts

Anyone in SoCal could help me with any information would be appreciated. First thing I need is a job, currently an Electrical Technician in the power industry. Thanks

brave man moving to a new place before getting a job. do like the other 10 million americans, resume on monster.com, etc.

also, the major electric companies in Southern California are Southern California Edison (SCE) and San Diego Gas & Electric. browse on there websites for job openings. There are a few other small electric companies run by cities, I believe Anaheim has there own. Oh, which reminds me of the largest, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (DWP).

Good luck and enjoy the weather!

Thanks for the responses.

It seems I may be moving with a job, waiting for a response from a job interview in that went well. I will make sure to give an update.

Indeed.com is a great job search site. Thanks.

I have also put in a few applications with a few other companies.

Is that a bad thing?

I have heard mixed opinions on that in NY but what do Californians really think?

Well if you dont mind being in the middle of nowhere then your good..

Places in LA/Orange County/San Diego are the best parts in so-cal to live. I would try finding a job near those areas.. Good Luck

I was really trying for SD but no jobs available and I received a good offer. Most places do not even reply to NY resumes.

Thanks

I am not looking forward to all the laws I have to follow. I am glad I had removed my tint from my windows after being pulled over for it always in nyc.

I chose southern california because the climate, culture and opportunities match what I was looking for in a future home. It was either that or move back to the caribbean. I have also considered florida but the job market was a mess for my work experience.

I have noticed opportunities in LA but because I am looking for somewhere more laid back (after living in NYC for 14 years) and besides LA is famous for traffic. I drive a manual transmission and my next car is more likely to be the same so I dont want to sit in traffic.

Bottom Line: I HATE SNOW AND COLD WEATHER.

Cold weather wont be a problem, just traffic during rush hours.. Try a bit north of LA, maybe valleys

Visited El Centro with the Mrs. this weekend. She wasn't impressed. We drove up to Salton Sea and to San Diego (she was impressed). The drive from El Centro to San Diego on the I-8 was great in the mountains, but boring in the desert. I never saw boulders that big in my life (well at least so many of them). At least the wont be any snow in El Centro, because thats where I will be this winter.

Well at least your near San Diego one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S. and your also a hop skip and a jump from Mexico so I'm sure you'll find some interesting things to do. El Centro is about as opposite from New York as you can get. Good luck with your move.

not necessarily a bad thing to live right on the borderline

but as with any race...too many is never a good thing. and in your case, mexicans.

lotta good info here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Centro,_California

with some highlights

The Economist issue that El Centro is, as stated by the magazine, "a boring place."

74.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

El Centro's unemployment rate was 27.5%, three times the overall United States unemployment rate of 9.7%

honestly seems like a very poor, boring city, and not a place that really represents california for what it is known as...

not a place i'd live in, but go with the wind i guess.

Sounds like SD fits what you're looking for.

Thanks for the info. I have been through the facts even visited twice. Unfortunately the city I have been trying to get to for the past two years (San Diego) has not been responding to my many job applications.

Update: Having been living in the Imperial County, I have been to Yuma, San Diego County and Riverside County. I find Imperial County to be different but not in a bad way. The food is great, the weather is good, but the farming is not what I like. It sure brings a lot of "unique" smells. I am sure anyone who has visited can relate to what I mean. Any thing from Broccoli to MANURE. I find that riverside county is more my style, unless SD offers me a job with decent pay. I know times are difficult but I can't understand why companies want to pay dirt cheap to live in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

They do it because they can. Companies know that they can pay little because they can always get young talent to take that job for that pay at least as a stepping stone job or others that are desperate for any work at all. It's unfortunate but that's the way it is.

I have been to Imperial County many times my wife is originally from Mexicali so she has friends that live there and we have to drive through there when visiting Mexicali so I definitely know what you mean in regards to the smells.

riverside county, for the most part, is a relatively cheap county to live in compared to the rest of california. housing is very affordable...roughly $300,000 for a 4 bedroom home. that is very good consider in my part of town, its about $600,000 for the same home.
