Looking to move to Socal from NY looking for contacts
Anyone in SoCal could help me with any information would be appreciated. First thing I need is a job, currently an Electrical Technician in the power industry. Thanks
brave man moving to a new place before getting a job. do like the other 10 million americans, resume on monster.com, etc.
also, the major electric companies in Southern California are Southern California Edison (SCE) and San Diego Gas & Electric. browse on there websites for job openings. There are a few other small electric companies run by cities, I believe Anaheim has there own. Oh, which reminds me of the largest, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (DWP).
Good luck and enjoy the weather!

Thanks for the responses.
It seems I may be moving with a job, waiting for a response from a job interview in that went well. I will make sure to give an update.
Indeed.com is a great job search site. Thanks.
I have also put in a few applications with a few other companies.

I chose southern california because the climate, culture and opportunities match what I was looking for in a future home. It was either that or move back to the caribbean. I have also considered florida but the job market was a mess for my work experience.
I have noticed opportunities in LA but because I am looking for somewhere more laid back (after living in NYC for 14 years) and besides LA is famous for traffic. I drive a manual transmission and my next car is more likely to be the same so I dont want to sit in traffic.
Bottom Line: I HATE SNOW AND COLD WEATHER.

Visited El Centro with the Mrs. this weekend. She wasn't impressed. We drove up to Salton Sea and to San Diego (she was impressed). The drive from El Centro to San Diego on the I-8 was great in the mountains, but boring in the desert. I never saw boulders that big in my life (well at least so many of them). At least the wont be any snow in El Centro, because thats where I will be this winter.

not necessarily a bad thing to live right on the borderline
but as with any race...too many is never a good thing. and in your case, mexicans.
lotta good info here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Centro,_California
with some highlights
The Economist issue that El Centro is, as stated by the magazine, "a boring place."
74.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
El Centro's unemployment rate was 27.5%, three times the overall United States unemployment rate of 9.7%
honestly seems like a very poor, boring city, and not a place that really represents california for what it is known as...
not a place i'd live in, but go with the wind i guess.

I currently work as an Electrical (Instrument & Controls) Technician for a electrical utility company. Besides that I have work as a Gas Turbine Operating Technician, Mechanical Technician, Electrician and Carpenter.
Update: Having been living in the Imperial County, I have been to Yuma, San Diego County and Riverside County. I find Imperial County to be different but not in a bad way. The food is great, the weather is good, but the farming is not what I like. It sure brings a lot of "unique" smells. I am sure anyone who has visited can relate to what I mean. Any thing from Broccoli to MANURE. I find that riverside county is more my style, unless SD offers me a job with decent pay. I know times are difficult but I can't understand why companies want to pay dirt cheap to live in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

I have been to Imperial County many times my wife is originally from Mexicali so she has friends that live there and we have to drive through there when visiting Mexicali so I definitely know what you mean in regards to the smells.
riverside county, for the most part, is a relatively cheap county to live in compared to the rest of california. housing is very affordable...roughly $300,000 for a 4 bedroom home. that is very good consider in my part of town, its about $600,000 for the same home.
