Gas from ARCO
As I understand it from a friend who works for BP which owns Arco, the main issue with Arco is that they don't put any detergents in their gasoline. Thus, the lower cost of their fuel.
All fuel starts the same, whether it's Chevron, Unocal, Shell, Mobil, etc. These companies purchase fuel from each other and trade with each other daily.
The difference maker is the additives that go into the fuel that makes them different (better or worse) and more/less expensive. You're paying for the additives and detergents.
So, Arco gas isn't necessarily "bad", just not as good as others.

I would only put Arco gas in worse case scenario situations. Saying if I only got $4 and say my Yaris is blinking (On Reserve Tank) and Arco offers $3.89 as oppose to Cheveron offering $4.01 for regular, I'll go with Arco.

I only use Chevron except on road trips. Road trips, I could care less if it's alcohol or gas in the tank just as long as I'm moving.
What princelybug stated, is how I've always understood it worked. At the same time, keep in mind those cheaper gases usualy have the highest if not the maximum amount of alcohol in its gas which the state law allows. (10%?) (although I get the assumption every gas company uses 10%)
The reason why the cheaper gas would come off as the bad guy, is due to the level of alcohol in it. Alcohol absorbs water, therefore it will absorb the moisture in the tank and run it through your fuel lines deteriorating anything rubber like over a long period of time.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though fellas. This is just how I've always understood it since high school.

ya, I tried to use my credit card and the Arco near my area and won't accept it. I was trying to fill it up on my rental since it was 10 cent cheaper from any other places...suck ass.....
Your boss is right don't use Arco unless you want less gas mileage, engine knocking, loss of power etc. Its not worth the 10cents a gallon you will save. If your already using Arco then stop and use Shell, Chevron or Unocal for a month straight and you will see the difference.
I only put Arco in if its the only thing around me and the light is on and I dont want to get out and push
I usually go to Sam's
i've noticed when I had my TL havent tested it on my 6 but maybe I will this week...
In the TL I would fill up with Chevron, shell and get 250-255 Full to Empty
and going to sams I would get 270-275
MPG didnt calculate it but Sams was better... for me anyway

Arco is not one of the top tier gasolines and if given the choice I will not use them.

its like asking if you were to buy water, would you buy tap water or purified water..
i mean you cant die off tap water, but its not necessarily good for you either. a few cents more and you can get purified water.

Cheap bastards haha
i've gotten used to filling up with Chevron...
as far as their gas...i use them all the time
but now with chase's 5% cash back on their credit cards there's no reason to for now.
I hate to burst everyones bubble, but even the "good gas" from Chevron, Shell, Mobil, and 76 in California is pure crap. We live in the land of fruits and nuts so we have to live with hippie legislation that requires double refinement of the gas. This means that we pay more for inferior gas (regardless of the detergent content).
In my 08 Civic Si, which just oozes power
, I run nothing but the crappy 91 found through out socal. At wide open throttle I have no problems. However, something about my parts selection in conjunction with the crappy gas and I get random knocks at really light throttle loads while cruising in 6th gear. I tried a tank of 100 octane race gas and the knocks went away completely and my entire knock threshold dropped. Too bad the stuff cost $9.00 a gallon.
Moral of the story, California gas will detonate early on even the mildest performance engines, causing the engine to retard the timing.
