i have nav in my car...and the majority of the time it says the disc is unformatted or it wont work with the blue screen telling me it wont work..but everynow and then it will work..does this mean the dvd unit is bad? isnt that the "brain"

if my nav screens reads error majority of the time but occasionaly will work, does that mean the dvd unit is messed up vs the disc..thinking the disc would either work or not work?
