DIY Dom's Nav/DVD Install w/ pics (2000 TL)

OK, as promised, here's how I did my Nav to DVD conversion. Sorry this is a book, but I tried to make it so anyone including myself could do it. I like the way I did it, but to each his own. I wanted a very stealth install, so that's why I did it this way.
Items needed: DVD player of your choice (I got a brand new Myron & Davis AD212 3/4 DIN DVD Player for $58.55 shipped from Ebay!). Dom's Nav/DVD converter found in group buys (I paid $160 shipped, don't buy any other, this is THE best). Blitzsafe audio adapter HON/AUX DMX V.1 ($70.34 shipped). wire strippers. 1/8 & 3/16 shrink tubing to cover splices, solder gun + flux and solder, drill & bits, 2 small round lugs & self tapping screws for grounds, sandpaper, electrical tape, phillips screwdriver and some hard flexible wire or similar for fishing wires under carpet.
1) First mount your DVD player where you want it. I mounted mine on the backside of the door behind the armrest in the back seat. I did this, because I wanted it to be out of site, the close proximity to the Nav unit and ease of running wires up front. This is what it looks like:

2) Remove the bottom only of the back seat by lifting at the bottom front and pulling forward. It will look like this (without the wires)

3) Remove the center console by following these directions to step 8 (no further!)

http://www.abunchofcars.com/diy_page...er_console.htm Sorry, I don't know how to put hyperlinks in here.

4) After following the first 8 steps, you're ready to plug in your Blitzsafe. Reach in behind the radio where you see the yellow wire in the picture. The empty plug behind the radio is on the bottom right side. If I remember right, the plug installs with the catch facing up. Just reach in there and you can feel the hole. BE PATIENT and you'll get it in. If your hands are too fat, have your girl or a friend do it. I'm 6'4" and my big hands did it!

Sorry for the little pic. I had to borrow it because I was too excited and forgot to take one! Let the plugged in Blitzsafe just hang there for now.

5) Climb into your trunk. I laid on my back and let my legs hang out the back. Find the 12 pin connector on the back of the Nav unit, I believe it was the center of three plugs. Unplug it and count the pin holes to be sure (12). Pull back the tape and plastic wrap to expose more wire to work with. Now separate the white (pin A4), red (pin A5), Yellow (pin A10) and green (pin A11). Take your time and be sure you have the right wires, the cut them all in the center of your working length. Carefully strip a little off all 8 ends that you have. Now take Dom's DB9 cable (the one with the big plug on the end). I slid a 1" piece of small shrink tubing onto each piece before I attached the wires. As per Dom's directions, take the wires going to the screen and twist together the white to the red on the DB9. Apply a little flux and solder together. Slide up the shrink tube over the solder joint and shrink it. (I used a lighter, but be carefull not to burn it, just shrink it!) Repeat this with the red to DB9 green, Yellow to DB9 blue and green to DB9 gray. Now the screen side is done and time to move to the nav end wires. Do the same as you did on the screen side except white to DB9 orange, red to DB9 yellow, yellow to DB9 purple and green to DB9 brown. Now everything is hooked up except the black and shield wire on the DB9. Twist these both together and solder a small lug to the end. Take some sandpaper and sand a small spot where you want this ground to go. This is very important for a good ground and good reception!! I drilled a small starter hole then fastened the lug with a washer and self-tapping screw to the metal under the rear shelf. I think you can see it all in this picture.

6) Tape everything up neatly with your electrical tape. Hook up the DB9 cable to Dom's converter. At this point, I hooked up the video out from my player to video 1 on the converter, plugged in the power wire to the converter and tucked it in behind the panel between the trunk and rear seat. Now I feed the power, ground and switch wires from the converter under the center of the rear seat. I also took the power, ground, remote eye and left & right audio from the DVD player and ran them under the seat also. Climb out of the trunk, you're all done back there. Yippee!

7) Now you need switched power for all this. When you removed the center console, you had to unplug the accessory outlet that's in the armrest. Perfect switched power! As you can see from the following picture, carefully strip back the insulation on the white wire and solder on a 6' piece of wire. Wrap it up with electrical tape.

8) Now, using your wire or whatever snake, feed this down the center hump, under the carpet to the back seat where your other wires are. Now you can twist the power wires from your DVD player and Dom's converter together. Slide a piece of shrink tube on you new power wire and solder it to the twisted power wires. Again, carefully shrink the tube.

9) Twist the ground wires from your DVD player and Dom's unit and solder it to a small lug like you did in the trunk. Sand, drill and fasten with a self-tapping screw just like you did before. This is where I put mine.

10) You're almost there! Now snake your left & right audio plugs, remote eye and switch from Dom's unit under the carpet following the same route as you did for the power wire except from rear to front this time. Take the left & right audio plugs, tuck them along the carpet, along the right side of the upper console and plug them into your Blitzsafe. Now you'll be able to tuck the blitzsafe and extra wire up on the side of the radio.

11) Next I ran my remote eye up the left side. I removed the little panel where the factory computer diagnostic plug is and ran the remote eye through there and mounted it with double sided tape that was included as shown:

12) Next it's time to mount the converter switch. I drilled a hole in the removed center console and mounted it beside the driver's seat for hidden easy access. A word of caution: notice where the tabs go into the front and also the ducts for the rear air. Either adjust your location or be very carefull re-installing the center console. I learned the hard way and broke my switch getting the air duct into it's receptacle on the center console. I replaced the switch and was more carefull putting it back together. Here's where I put the switch:

13) Wrap it up! Put the back seat in, the center console and the two side wood trim pieces. Cross your fingers that you paid attention to everything here and start up the car. If the nav screen doesn't come up, don't panic, just flip the converter switch. If it still doesn't come up, you broke the switch like I did and it's in DVD mode. If everything is alright, hit your cd button twice on the radio to switch to the Blitzsafe. Throw your favorite DVD into your player. Flip the DVD/Nav switch beside the seat (if that's where you put it). Crank up the volume and get ready to be astounded! Mine looked like these:
Widescreen

Full screen

DVD player lit up before closing door and armrest:

Well, I hope this helped you and made this install of this fantastic mod easier. I know I had a lot of anxiety and had to a lot of searching and begging for help. Although I was very carefull writng these instructions, if you find any errors, please report them to me. I do work instructions for a living although not on this subject. This took me 3 1/2 hours to write this up, so if you found it helpful, a PM with a thanks would go a long way. Likewise if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to PM me also. I check this site at least 5 times a day and I'll respond promptly. Thanks to the friendly people at Acurazine who advised and helped me out since I've been on here. This is my way of contributing to the better of the forum.

Enjoy,
Dave Rubino

Dave, FANTASTIC write up!!!! Great instructions and great pictures.

One question...While it is way cool to do this, when and why do people watch DVDs on their NAV screen? Just curious.

I love having nav and wouldn't be without it. With the DVD mod, the nav still works. You can still hear it talk and if you have to see it, you just flip the switch. As far as watching it, my wife and I go on a lot of trips and it's great for the passenger to pass the time and if I get stuck in one of those big traffic jams (especially going to Cape Cod on the weekends) we can both pass the time. It's also nice while parked at meets or just showing off your car at shows. Hope that answers your question.

Most DVD players like mine have aux inputs so you can also plug in an mp3 player or game system. Many have the jacks right on the front. Mine has extra pigtails out the rear.

I just have one question about the Myron & Davis AD212
I read some descriptions online and it said that it displays id3 tag information of your mp3s on the screen that you hook up to. (A picture would be nice to see) Also, does it play a DVD full of mp3s, or does it only play DVD video
Thanks

Geez, I don't know, I'll have to get back to you on that one. I've only played video dvd's in mine and since it's located behind the rear armrest, I never see it. My car's up on jackstands for the winter and I'm going on vacation Saturday, but if I can get in there before I go and pop in a mp3 dvd, I'll get back to you. Not sure if I have the headphone to rca adapter to hook up either.

Newbee, plz help me

I am interested in getting a new 2006 TL or a new 2006 Infiniti G35. The TL is looking better all the time since I'm looking to do everything in here that you guys have done...this is an awesome diy example, but I have a couple questions.

1.) I believe that the 2000 model and 2006 models are different setups and therefor directions will be different, is that correct? If so, where can I get a great DIY for 2006 or similar?

2.) Where can I find anything out about Group Buys? I am going crazy searching for this. Please let me know, I would really appreciate it!!!

Also, please feel free to email me and I will give you my number or send me yours. I have no problem discussing this with someone over the phone.

rmoran@sbcglobal.net

You guys ROCK!!! Thank you!!!

Thanks guys! Just wanted to allieviate some of the problems I had putting it all together. If someone can find a good way to do something, why not take a few extra minutes to document it and share. Everyone's helped me so much, this is me "paying it forward".

I got another question if anybody can answer.....on step 5 did you cut the wires and connect it to the RBG or did you just tap into the wires?

.....cut them all in the center of your working length. Carefully strip a little off all 8 ends that you have.......
Isn't it clear ?
those 4 wires need to be cut creating essentially a by-pass

Question great DIY

love the DIY!!!!
i've been thinking about changing my head unit so that i could play movies but this works even better.
two things though:
1) is there another place to get the steps that are in the hyperlink. the website is no longer there
2) is it possible to also connect a TV tuner with the dvd player ( if not, i dont mind. i really just wanted a dvd player, a tuner would be a plus though)

Sweet.

I'd like something similar in my 06 RL, but they don't make a compatible Blitzesafe Honda/Acura DMX. What would you suggest?

My DIY still shows up, but just not removing the console. Do a search and you should find something. It's not hard to do. Otherwise PM me and I'll try to give you directions. Some DVD players come with a TV tuner in them. I didn't get it because I just wanted DVDs.

I would suggest either a internet search or contact Dom who made the unit. He's an authorized vendor on here.

Can't take the credit man. Dom figured it out and made the module. I just installed it. Anyone with any more questions, feel free to contact me. Thanks to all for the kind words. The DIY was a labor of love.
