from what I have gathered so far is that the 2014 MDX ELS plays MP3, ACC, and WMA. These are compressed formats. I can try to convert it to a compressed format, but my tools are geared towards lossless. Be careful what tool you use to convert, it has to handle 5.1 (surround) files. Some don't.

I assembled three files of the Acura mix and compressed. Took a guess. Let me know if they play. They will not sound as good as the RDX, but they will be close at 320 bps m4a.

 

FLAC files won’t play on my wife’s 2016 MDX. FLAC files are not recognized. The CD player plays 5.1 DVD-A and DTS but doesn’t sound nearly as good as the current RDX playing USB.

 

Unfortunately this is from the 2016 MDX manual.

 

Can we please move this to the mdx forum? I already supplied a few sample 5.1 files that might be able to be played on the mdx.

The files you prepared play, but sadly not in 5.1.

I have been playing all day with .ACC files, creating all kinds of variations using the "AA - Test Tones" sample provided. (which plays a voice in each speaker, identifying which channel it is)
What I have discovered is that, while all the ACC files play, some files get dumbed down to stereo, while other files only the L and R channels play.

Has anyone been able to locate a iOS app that plays 5.1 flac files via CarPlay? I've tried Flacbox and Vox, both claim to do it. Everytime I try, it gets downscaled to stereo. Same files via usb stick play in 5.1 surround. Google has not been useful in this inquiry. Thanks!

 

The general consensus is that the iPhone can only play back stereo audio over USB. Multi-channel output would require the HDMI adapter connected to a compatible home theater receiver.

I wonder if this is a digital copy protection issue. I have beat my head against a few TVs dealing with this crap.

 

Like you I tried using an app and like you I got a message that said to the effect that CarPlay downgraded the playing to the limits of CarPlay. I put all of my 5.1 files on a thumb drive and insert it directly into the USB port. Then I choose USB files on the screen in our car and it plays AWESOME! Read through all of the posts here and you will get lots of amazing information. I started out with nothing and now have many GB of 5.1 music, and it plays, like WOW!~. The Acura files posted here are fun and I am very thankful to whoever posted them. My wife now understands what I spend so much energy trying to extract from BluRay and DVD discs.

CarPlay in my car is just about useless. It quits about every 5 minutes and then comes back on;. I can’t induce the failure, so I don’t know what to look at. I thought it was my USB port, but when the thumb drive is in there playing 5.1 music, there is no interruption at all. I will replace my cable again and make sure my Apple PublicBeta software is working right.....sigh.....

 

Agree USB is the way to go and I have been doing for a bit, since following the various threads on here. I have been spending plenty time and money getting the higher quality music to enjoy the surround in the RDX. As a CarPlay user, I was hoping there was a way to get both, CarPlay functionality and high quality sound. Alas, Apple hasn't gotten on board yet from a sound quality side. Sorry to hear about your issues with CarPlay, my first thought there would relate to the Public Beta you are using, as software stability is not always there in betas.

 

Agreed. Some of the beta test packages have improved performance and even changed some formatting of the icons, etc. Having CarPlay quit and restart randomly is annoying, but I do have other formats as we have noted. Since I use my iPhone and Maps for navigations to specific addresses, I need to use CarPlay for my music on those excursions. That, and I have a big music library on my phone, not including the .FLAC files we have been discussing here. I do send feedback to Apple about this subject, but I haven’t heard anything back from them to date. Thanks for the discussion! You have a blessed day!

I just wanted to post here since I finally got around to converting some of my collection of DTS-CDs and DVD-Audios. I was only able to get 10 discs done last night, but copied them to a thumb drive and tried it in the RDX. It was like a whole different sound system in the car. I was impressed. I think my favorite was Grover Washington, Jr.'s "Just The Two of Us". All the instruments surrounding you is pretty incredible. I just wish I could find more that weren't ridiculously priced...

You're gonna be blown away. One of the songs actually has a 2 channel and 5.1 version so you can listen to them back to back
