What do I need to remotely connect a laptop to the NET ???

OK….Dummy question that I’m sure most of you guys can easily answer.
I’m looking to buy a cheap basic laptop or maybe even a used one.
Like the title says, what do I need to connect if I’m traveling out of state for a few days?

I don’t have an AOL or any other nationwide service, only a local ISP.
They do have an 800 number, but it’s like 11-cents a minute to connect.

Assuming there’s no data port or wireless connection available.
If I get a data-cable for my cell phone will that work?
It’s an LG VX4500 w/ Verizon service.
I have tons of monthly minutes that I never use and nationwide toll free.

So if I just plug the data cable into the USB on the laptop do I just use the phone to dial my ISP back in PA to make this work or am I missing something major here?
If this works is it comparable to dialup speeds?
I’m not looking to download big files, just basic browsing and checking my E-Mail.

Second question, do I need a Modem, Network card or BOTH to use one of those data ports in a hotel?

Thanks…….. Shawn S

ya just get an air card for verizon. or the data cable for your phone

will have nothing to do with your isp.

otherwise just use data port at most hotels.

otherwise... dont bother.

no shawn, it doesn't have to be another monthly fee, verizon has whats called express network, and the time I spend online through my cell comes out of my regular minutes... verizon provides you the connectivity to the net when using express network, not your normal isp let me find the thread that explains it all.

That's why I like having SBC DSL. As part of the agreement, you can get dialup service at no charge when you're on business, etc.

Well, my phone seems to support that.
I guess I'll have to research what else I need.

LG VX-4500:
National Access capable (Mobile Office Kit sold separately)
Mobile Web capable

Mobile Office Kit (for NationalAccess (1XRTT))
Everything you need to get your laptop onto Verizon Wireless' NationalAccess network, for wireless access to your business network without a separate ISP account.

Keep the help coming. This isn’t my area of expertise.

COOL….. Thanks for the info.
I did some research on this and found the detailed info on the Express Network system over on Howard Cell Phone Forums.
I stopped over Verizon on Friday and picked up the Data cable/Mobile Office Kit for my VX4500.
It was only 39 bucks and comes with all the software I need and my phone is setup to do this.
The guys there explained to me about the way it just uses your monthly minutes when you’re online.
This should work perfect for me.
I only plan to use this when traveling on vacations & such so I don’t need a lot of usage time.
I have the “America’s Choice” plan with 4,000 total minutes between two phones that I never even make a DENT in using.

Now all I need is a Laptop.

There were (2) picks under that MENU pulldown.
The first one said “WebExpress”, but I couldn’t get that one to grab a signal.
The other one said “Quick 2 Net” and that connected at 14.4

You’re right; I am out in the sticks.
But this was just a test on my desktop to see if I could get it working.

this was using the software supplied by verizon I assume? I'm not familiar with it.

Try connecting via a normal dial-up networking connection with your verizon account info, and see if it gets any faster.

i wanna know if it does

Yes, it came with the Mobil Office Kit, but I think it can be downloaded from their site.

I don't know quite how to do that yet.
