Business Insider 2017 Car of the Year runner-up- Acura TLX
Why the Acura TLX is one of the best cars of 2017 - Business Insider
Interesting that the TLX a spec was given runner up by business insider. They aren't exactly known for car reviews but still interesting to see.

isn't the accord being sold as a 2018 model, though? In such a case, it can't really be included for the 2017 awards. The Accord is just barely coming to market now, in November. the 2.0T won't even be arriving for several more weeks (if rumors are to be believed)

In that case, Aspec can't be included as well since it too is a 2018 model. I believe it's the 2017 year (not model year) award.

Figures. Same person who wrote this dumb review.

Same reviewer who wrote:
"My TLX had a brilliant 3.5-liter V6 under the hood (Honda makes superb V6's) and all the go-fast upgrades that earned it the A-Spec designation."
and
"The A-Spec package adds some oomph to the regulation TLX. A 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 is under the hood, and it's fantastic."
When none of that is true. A-Spec doesn't have any go-fast upgrades and A-Spec doesn't add any oomph.

It sounds like they come up with a shortlist of 15 "chosen from the more than five dozen we road test during the year.", and then select 5 runner-ups before eventually selecting one as "car of the year". A-spec is among the 5 runner-ups (so far 3 has been announced):
Business Insider will name its 2017 Car of the Year on November 14, based on 15 finalists. Each day this week, we're taking another look at the five vehicles that were runners-up. So far, we've revealed the Acura TLX A-Spec and the 2018 McLaren 720S. Now it's time for the Chevy Bolt.

Need to check the winner last year, for comparison's sake. The 2016 car of the year was the NSX, as if anyone can afford it .... yet they mention the Aspec as good value. The A4 was a runner up in 2016, should have won. Fantastic car, affordable and praticable.
If the TLX wins I call BS, 2018 Accord should have been in top 5.

I suppose it's not meant to be a thorough review of all cars. The top 5 were selected from the "few dozens" they got the chance to test drive. The fact that A-spec is in the top 5 in itself is already an achievement. From my perspective, while I like TLX a lot, I think it's difficult to choose a "car of the year" or even "a few cars of the year" across all car types in any case. So, whoever loves TLX, continue loving it because - hey it's not just you, folks doing car reviews in BI do too! Those who don't, well no reason to change your opinions just because one magazine says it's a great car.

I am sure there will be a run on the TLX by McLaren ex-owners who dumped their cars so they could get in on the fun.

The question is why all the hate. The folks at Business Insider liked the car. This is no isolated incident. Many other reviewers have also liked the car. Why should anyone use a positive review as a point of derision? It's as if you believe your opinion is the only one that counts. Like I've said before all the complainers should just migrate to the forums that are dedicated to the automobiles they are driving. All the Audi and BMW drivers should simply go to their associated forums and preach to the choir. I think many of us here are tired of listening to your superior attitudes. It's as if you need to justify spending the extra $15,000. You don't have to convince us that you made what you think is an excellent decision. We believe you. Now will you simply move on. I for one don't want to hear about your BMW track day or performance driving school in an Acura forum. My suspicion is that the BMW forums are so full of that type of stuff that the only place you think you can get any props for it is here. Unfortunately this is not the place for it. Please sprinkle that knowledge on your fellow BMW owners and spare us your ego.

I like bumping my gums. anyone that tells stories, likes to bump their gums too.
who cares why we dont like it. it only matters is if you like it, since you paid ~$40k for it.

It's going beyond discussions or different opinions. When you find yourself stuck on an "enthusiast" forum and can't find anything positive to say about the car, it's time to move on. There are certainly a lot of places you can leave your reviews to let the potential buyers, manufactures and even consumer protection agencies know your experience and opinions. Internet makes some things that would be considered rude and unnecessary in real life seem ok. You don't argue with your neighbor day in and day out just to tell them their car is crap.

- 5 series
- Gulia Quadrifoglio
- Stinger
- Accord
- A5 Sportback
- 911
....plus other refreshed cars for the 2018 model year, and price is not a factor for car of the year by them choosing NSX last year

We never did say anything bad, just that it does't deserve to win car of the year, that's all. Think about it for a second, to win it has to be substantially better than the:

Interesting going back to 2006 when I first joined with my then new TL the most famous targets of the "we are just as good but a lot cheaper group" were the German cars especially BMW then MB & Audi. I found a lot of the comments interesting since I had both a TL & 330CI at the same time which I drove every day. It was very common to see the annual 6 way car throw-downs in C&D-R&T that included the TL. The TL being included at the top end version 6 way tests is long over. Lots of good give & take back then.
Now it seems we have moved into a time where the TLX no longer runs in those areas except in it adds. It also seems like the fans instead of give & take want a monolithic TLX is wonderful forum, decent is not welcome. We can pelt the other guys even Accord but its micro aggression & hate speech to take a non orthodox stance here.
Also found a lot of the comments about posters cousins, neighbors brother in laws friend experience to also be interesting when comparing the cars. They generally did not match my own or various publications experiences but that's the internet.
Generally if you have a target car that your car company has said it wants to emulate rather then have that car companies product a sitting target so you can feel good it might be of value to have a target that can shoot back. Your results or desires on what you want in a forum may differ.
I have no more problem saying for a primarily track day + fun street car I would prefer Camaro Z/28 or Mustang Shelby GT350R to an M4GTS on a BMW forum then saying while the TLX is a nice competent daily driver its no McLaren competition for Car of the Year anymore then anything I own is.
Driving school Vids: Was talk about oversteer/understeer & driving through the & twisties. I did a survey during a debate of the 4G & asked to pick. I get my knowledge from daily driving experience - from C&D/R&T- Drivers ED - performance driving school - on track experience Drag or road course. Less then 1% got their knowledge from performance school or track experience.
Yet some of the most vocal were at best cut & paste guys from the car magazines. There is a lot of back & forth here about the TLX & handling. Since I would expect there is very little if any experience here with the TLX when really pushed it might be of interest for people to see what it actually looks like to have a good handling Sport Sedan (interesting words thrown around here a lot) run at 10/10 by a non-pro driver. It also should have clarified why many of us find fault with the TLX Hot Rod TV adds, not the car, the adds.
Think as long as no one is personally attacking someone or just saying this car sucks without saying what they believe that the true fans should develop a thicker skin. Recognize with the current level of sales something needs to get fixed one way or another.
No car is perfect & above reproach. It seems foolish to invest so much of who you are in a car that you get your knickers in a knot if someone points of what they perceive as faults. If you disagree with the criticism you can do one of two things, write a rebuttal or simply ignore the post that offends you.

I read the background article about the cars that were nominated as “finalists”. Pretty weird that the usual people who like to put down the TLX are all up in arms that some journalist somewhere actually had the gall to say good things about the TLX, but conveniently ignore the fact that in the same article they also said plenty of good things about the other finalists.
So which is it? Is the author only wrong about the TLX? Or is he wrong about all the finalists?
It seems pretty safe to assume the author, in order to write that article, has driven all those cars. It’s also pretty safe to assume that the TLX hate-brigade hasn’t.

As for the TLX review it was a nice one despite the errors in it. The guys seems very happy in the HONDA family of cars after all his years of driving one of his own.

Has to do about the mismatch of cars selected. Like apples to oranges to plumbs to grapes. The lack of group commonality makes the final award meaningless. Its easy to separate the cars into at least three or four distinct groups. Somehow a $38K Chevy Bolt competing against a $212K Aston Martin for the same award seems to be a little bit stupid.
