Thoughts on a 2008 BMW Z4 coupe (E86)?

I almost said 370Z but didn't because as I"ve complained in the past, whenever I see a thread like this and someone comes in and offers something not even contemplated by OP I imagine it gets kind of aggravating. I love my 350Z 'vert, so much fun in the summer time.

OP is a rare breed. When I did a medium length post criticizing the article he posted, he actually thanked me and was thoughtfully appreciative of contrarian opinion. Ifonly more people were like that.

But you're right in general...especially on forums like this when people post specific things they want to get they are simply looking for validation and not actual opinions/criticism...

The Z4's are great lil roadsters, fairly reliable if maintained, just be prepared to deal with the aggravation of convertible issues and wear items.

Gotcha, my mistake - I'm not too familiar with the e80 line.. have a ton of experience with E30, E36, and have owned an E90 M3.

You can't beat the BMW straight 6 and suspension setup, there's something uniquely european with a well running rig. That seems to be the catch for folks considering getting into them, is if you get into one used, be prepared to fund the maintenance because it will need it.

The Z4 coupes have a great profile, and are sweet looking rides in my opinion.

I'm quite the opposite of Justin. If I'm paying good money, I want it all. A cubby hole where otherwise at least a stereo should be is not asking for a lot.

And if it is just a fun car, it might be seeing some out of town moments. Having navi somewhere new or fairly unknown is never a bad thing.

i also didnt look at price of car. if spending good money on DD, it's absolutely needed for aesthetics.
if weekend fun car for okay price, who cares!?

And yeah, that works. Personally, I don't like anything foreign in my cabin, or anything loose either. phone holders, cords, whatever are a no no for me

hey, I'm not hating on your perspective. It can definitely work. I know oem navi systems aren't even all that great, but like I said, I like to have it all, even if buying a 10 year old car. I want it loaded.

That's part of the reason I can't switch to German cars... there are way too many options for their cars, making their prices insane. Not having everything makes a part of my brain want to explode

Nanxun, that car you posted, I believe, is a base model. It appears to have poorly painted base front calipers, instead of the 4 piston Akebono calipers.

I believe the trim lines go: base (no name) -> touring -> sport touring -> nismo

I have a feeling the nismo is out of your price range, but if anything, try to find a Sport Touring. They are 80-85% of what a Nismo is. They come nicely appointed, and have most of the important stuff the nismo has.. forged wheels, big brakes, syncro rev match, better stereo, LSD, etc.

Even though it's the bastard model, when I was looking into my second S2000...
I did consider driving the 3.4L Boxster (I think 2006 model and up had the bigger engine).
I figured if I was gonna choke on German parts and maintenance, might as well be the best.

and im pretty sure that Nanxun isn't looking for a 15+ year old Porsche, regardless if the IMS bearing was done or not. Porsche tax is fucking insane.

There are plenty more and this is in an area where a convertible is fairly rare and not all that useful. Look in CA or FL and these will be dime a dozen even for one that's slightly newer.

No it's not as new, but it sure drives awesome.

and I cant believe you're actually recommending a 15 year old Porsche to someone who isn't looking to spend a lot of money. Oh sure, price of entry is manageable. But you get what you pay for.

FYI - I purchased mine with 115,000 for $12,500 .. just make sure you get a good PPI and check for consistent compression.

What I linked you isn't a terrible deal, but I think you could get him down a grand or so. IMO - 04 & 05 are the best years for these cars at the given price point.

The nice thing with a vert, like the s2000 (and really any vert) is that they more than likely never saw cold weather driving. No salt. No ice. No sand and gravel. No road grime. Etc. Winters are super hard on cars, especially as they age. The nice thing with a high mileage s2000 is that it likely never really saw adverse conditions.

A summer only car with 100k is not the same as a year round car with 100k.
