Leak underneath '13 TL MT
Leak underneath '13 TL MT
I am about to purchase this '13 6MT TL and I noticed underneath what looks like fluid leaking.
Not an expert but this pic was below the engine area, I believe.
Anyone familiar with this or know if it's an issue I should be cautious of? I was told it could be rear differential or transmission fluid but not sure.
Car has 40,000 miles on it and I am planning on buying it from a Honda dealer.
Thanks.

there's a giant hole. it doesnt matter what part it is. a giant hole.
you mentioned it's up front. that would either be the oil pan or tranny pan.
I cant tell because of the black cover. some one tried to cover the hole.
if it is oil pan, you can replace the pan...HOWEVER, you dont know how long the engine was ran without oil.FUCK THAT.
Now, you're looking at possible engine damage.... because of oil starvation.
pass this car up. Dont buy

Justin, what the hell are you rambling about? I cannot tell what I'm looking at (camera is too close), but it looks like the screw holding the black plate in place is meant to be there. It screws in perfectly into the metal backing that has provisions for a screw there anyway.
again- can't tell what I'm looking at, but, it doesn't look jimmy rigged to me. That's not to say there isn't a gasket leak there... obviously something is going on.

There's also that gaping hole on the bottom right corner of the black plate... not sure if something was broken off, or if it's supposed to look like that. Picture is blurry when I try to get a better look.
Yeah but who the fuck knows what's on the other side... the black plate looks like a shield, not an oil cover of any kind. If it's supposed to hold oil in, it wouldn't be held in place with one screw, at the very bottom.
i dont think it's there to hold oil in. i think it's there to hide whatever damage there is.
we can all agree that those are impact marks...the black dirt/marks?
and can we all agree on not buying this?!
i still believe that's the tranny....if thats the tranny....that's not the drain bolt.

Also, the car is coming from a Honda dealer, which means it likely has warranty of some kind on it. I'm guessing OP has test driven the car with no issues. I would ask the dealership to look into and/or repair whatever that leak is, prior to signing any paperwork for the car.
Personally, I think Justin is making a mountain out of a mole hill, without enough information. If you see the leak, ask the dealer to diagnose and fix!

Also, the hole seems too perfectly round to be a punch-through. It was meant to be there.
I can't find that on the parts diagrams (mainly because I can't find what combination has the '13 w/ MT) but it looks like an exhaust pipe right at the upper foreground of the picture. The black cover has some rusty spotting appearance at the top which looks to me like it got hot and oxidized. Maybe it's a heat shield?

i don't want him to get burned either, but, who's to say the dealership even looked at the car? Got it in on trade, it's four years old only, check tires, check brakes, ok good to sell!

The picture was taken while it was on a lift. My buddy did a quick peak when I took it for a test drive. It drove fine from what I could tell.
I did inform the dealer of the leak and they said they are going to take it to an Acura dealer to diagnose/fix.
I am going to insist that they warranty this anyway and provide some proof that the issue was addressed and taken care of as I don't want to get burned, even with a warranty from the dealer.

That's just the flywheel cover.. it doesn't look original.. but there is no fluid there.
So even though there appears to be a hole near the cover, it shouldn't effect the vehicle.
The fluid is probably from rear main seal. It's not a lot but it's something.
It could also be blown from somewhere else since it's one of the lowest points of the powertrain
Get it thoroughly checked out.
I can assure you though.. that pot mark.. plate cover is not a big deal.
It could be indicative that a trans / engine replacement has occurred at some point though.
Could be as simple as a shitty trans drop clutch install.. but get it inspected before buying.
Not a deal breaker in my book.

So, OP, did you buy it?
I think Justin was tryna snag it from out from under you.

I had the same thought...
