Need help with HID fogs!!!

I need some help guys, I've had the H8 HID fog kit from hidextra.com for almost a year now and love it, no problems whatsoever. I did not opt for the unessessary relay harness since my 2008 TL has a factory one unlike 04-06's, so my current kit feeds power to the ballasts thru the factory fog connectors then out to the bulbs. I've been wanting to do the insependant fog mod for some time now and can't seem to get answers on how to do it without that additional relay harness which I do not want to use for a few reasons, (it's unessessary, also I already have a relay harness for my LED DRL's) and I've never had a problem with them. could someone please help!!!!

The idea of the independent fog lights works because the 04-06 don't have fogs. People that have an independent fog light wire their own harness and switch into the cabin. If you don't want to use the regular fog light switch, then sure, you can definitely wire up your own switch and relay harness but if you want to stick to the factory foglight switch, (correct me if I'm wrong anyone) but I don't think you can have an "independent fog light". And the relay harness for fog lights is NOT "Unnecessary". it's an added safety precaution because the HID ballast can draw more power than regular fog light harnesses are used to. The relay harness will directly grab the power from the battery and uses the foglight connector merely as a switch. It's for safety.

ok thanks for ur input but whether is necessary or not I don't want another on my battery but have seen 07-08's with independent fogs using the stock switch with the only exception being they are using the relay harness

you're making it more difficult than it needs to be. get another relay harness and call it a day. that's the only way to wire them up to be independent.

Everyone that has a 07+ TL with independent fogs are using a relay harness. it's the easiest way and makes sense because it's only $10 for a relay harness.

just because you have a relay harness alrdy for your drl doesn't mean you can't wire another separate relay up to the battery.

oh and you say they have been trouble free which is good, but just so you know there has been another member on here that had hid fogs hooked up to her TL without a harness. one day she got in the car and her whole electrical system got shorted and fried several things in her car. all because of no relay harness for her fogs.

it's added protection but yet people love to say it's useless and not necessary. have it your way. and remember her fogs worked good for awhile and that happened one day

ok well how would I tie that harness into the existing kit I have? or do I swap it all out with the new harness? my last question is what size fuse is needed for the mini add a fuse?

I have relays for my DRLs and fogs. I didn't use the kit at first with my HIDextra kit, and I always had trouble with the ballasts sometimes not getting enough power and only one light turning on. Now that I use a relay, I've never had an issue, and it feels safer.

That said, I have no idea how to do the independent mod. I'd like that functionality, but not if it is invasive to any factory wiring.

I hear ya I'm def gunna get the relay kit and try the mod if someone could help on explaining it. seems like the best DIY is missing photos and I'm also not exactly sure what size add a fuse to use not to mention there's alittle confusion of that thread about one of the wires colors, he says his is red but it's blue lol I dunno

This is how your new relay harness will look like. Some come with a blue wire while others come with a red trigger wire. When I say "Trigger" wire that is the wire that gets the signal to activate the relay to give power to the ballasts.

In our scenario (2007-2008 Base and TLS) since our cars come factory with fog lights already, we will be wiring up the trigger wire to the wire that is located behind the steering column. You'll see it in the pictures below

The trigger wire in the relay harness pictured is the one that has a female connector. You'll see 2 male connectors and 1 female. The female connector is the one that will be used to wire to the fog light switch. One is ground other is power.

Remove the lower knee panel to get more room

Knee panel is removed

In this picture you will see that he's pointing to a connector behind the steering column. Use the ignition as reference so you can see where he's pointing. It's a little small block. Disconnect it.

Once you have it disconnected look for a BLUE WIRE with a WHITE STRIPE. Cut that wire like you see below.

Now you want to remove some of the insulation. Grab yourself some wire strippers and strip back the insulation a bit. About 1 - 1.5 inches should be good. It's up to you really.

This picture below has text written in the picture so I don't need to narrate it.

Last step is to hook up the positive and negative wires from the relay harness to the battery...

Oh and you will need extra wiring because you need to fish the two wires into the cabin. The 2 trigger wires coming from the relay harness isn't long enough. You'll have to find a location that you can feed the wires through as well as make the wires even longer so you can tap into fuse #11 of the interior kick panel and the fog light switch.

ok I think I got it, one of the trigger wires goes to the fuse #11 and the other goes to the blue/white wire I cut (we do nothing with the other end that is still on the connector). the pic I was having trouble with was the one where he had the text bubbles. also what size fuse goes in #11? I haven't seen what an add a fuse looks like

I just don't see anywhere what size fuse to use in the add a fuse, it was two spots for fuses and obviously one is the 30amp fuse that is already in the #11 spot

the wire coming from the add-a-fuse should be protected with a 20 amp fuse, and should connect to the female connector on the wiring harness.
