DIY- Remove Top Console Cover (also Replace Cup-holder)

Perform Do-It-Yourself auto maintenance at your own risk. You can kill or injure someone or damage the car. Work or raise an auto only on a level, concrete floor. Do not go under any auto unless you are completely certain that it is secure. You and only you, are responsible for your work and safety.

Before removing the top console cover you must remove the shift knob and boot assembly. Go here first: DIY- Remove/Replace Shift Knob and Shift Indicator Light

Front and rear, left and right is ALWAYS related to the car itself, NOT how you are facing it:
LEFT is always the DRIVER side.
RIGHT is always the PASSENGER side.

Text relates to the picture below the text.

Tools and parts needed:
1. 10 mm wrench.
2. Plastic auto body prying tools (a few bucks at Harbor Freight). Plastic is less likely to damage or scratch anything.
3. Eye protection, face protection, gloves and protective clothes.

Plastic prying tools are about 15 cm long and look like this:

Warning; there is electrical wiring inside the console, including SRS Airbag wiring. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable:

With the shift knob and boot assembly previously removed, the console top cover can be removed. Begin by gently prying up the silver, left side console trim piece. Start at the rear and work forward. As it comes loose, rotate the rear upward and pull the front clips straight out to the rear:

Do the same on the right side, silver console trim piece:

Here is the silver trim removed, showing how the clips go into the console:

Open the console lid for clearance. Starting at the left side, gently pry to release the console top cover clips. Note the clip at the rear under the lid:

Do the same on the right side. Again, note the clip at the rear, under the lid:

The top cover is fairly tight against the lower front panel (seat heat and power outlet). Gently work it loose and lift it off:

If you need to replace the cup-holder, it simply unscrews from the bottom of the top cover:

Installation is the reverse of removal.

If you are accessing the console light wire, continue.
