38 MPG on my 10 hour trip!

Driving home from TN on Friday I got 38 MPG! I can usually get 36 on a mostly hwy trip and my average around the city is 27 but I could not figure this one out. I know we had a pretty good tail wind but I didn't think it would make that much of a difference. BTW this is a driveway to driveway average, not just hwy. Pic to come I am having trouble uploading it right now but here is what the MID said

AVG MPG: 38
AVG MPH: 63
DIST: 611
TIME 9:41

Damn thats crazy. This means technically you could have made that trip on 1 tank using your reserve of course but you would have been sipping the bottom of the tank which is never good.

27 CITY that shit is unheard of. You must drive like a serious G-ma

I thought about that also. I filled up the car at mile 168 on the trip so this is what was left.

It's normal, I made several trips from LA to Vegas, or LA to San Francisco, and LA to San Diego, and the longer the trip is the better MPG, TL is made for long distance drives...

How hilly are those drives? I drove interstates 75, 81, 70 which are not dead flat but it is not mountainous either.

Agreed Type-S uses a lot more fuel. 28 is my best too...

these cars get awesome gas mileage for the power! I feel bad for the g35 owners, a little more power, nearly 20 MPG less!

the mid can lie

do a total gallons used and total miles driven calculation
If you didnt fill up again when you got home- how do you know how much fuel was actually used?

I have a stock 04 TL auto (engine wise that is). I recently changed the spark plugs and trans fluid, but other than that this is the car. The other huge factor is that I now drive the speed limit. It is true that the MID is not always accurate but to make the trip on potentially one tank of gas is amazing. My civic would run out half way there. I though about driving an extra 168 miles to see if I could do it but I didn't want to suck the tank dry.

BTW I have heard here it is bad to suck the tank dry so I don't do it. However isn't the pump pulling from the bottom of the tank so it doesn't matter? That with the driving stirring up the gas.

These cars are good for 30-33 mpg all day long at 70-80 mph. If you are really light on the gas, the car could get what voigt states. I drive my car all day on the highway and get 30-31 mpg on just about every trip. I do the math when I fill up and the mid is almost dead on. These cars are great hwy runners.

Two more helpful factors. I pumped up my tires to 33.5 psi front and back and used cruse control the whole way. Finally got the pic to work.

You guys think the TL's have good fuel economy with only 258HP? You ever drive a C6 Corvette? My 05 C6 6spd would average 30mpg on the highway and thats not going by the cars onboard computer thats my own calculations at the pump. 05-07 C6 has 400hp and 400tq

Also, to the original poster are you just basing these claims off what the computer said? You will find if you calculated it yourself it wasnt getting 38 miles to the gallon. I just dont think the TL is capable of 38 mpg without going down hill and the help of a serious tailwind the entire time.

If im wrong then I take all this back and that is damn good!! And I am in no way saying our cars arent good on fuel because they certainly are.

I just checked my receipt when I filled up. I drove a couple miles (2 or 3 before I filled up. However just going off the MID numbers and my receipt. My receipt says I pumped 11.623 gallons (I always stop at the first click on the pump). So I guess if I take the milage from pump to pump, 611 - 168 = 443. Then if I divide 443 by 11.623 It comes out to just over 38.1.

It seems to match, although I don't know if I did it right.

You have to remember that is a huge v8 with tons of low end torque, this is a 3.2L V6 which has very little torque and power in the low end vs. a corvette... and as well is made from steel and other metals, not fiberglass and carries 5 people...

Yeah I know :-) but its still cool to say my 400HP V8 Corvette can do 30mpg on the highway. It weighed around 3250lbs Either way though I am very happy with the economy of my 07 TL. Now my Jeep SRT8 on the other hand lol

I'm a believer... I made a trip of 500 miles and got 35mpg at a average of 64 mph. And in the city, I stretch out the gears and get 27mpg. IMO the CAI and exhaust help it breath and run better for long trips. It's just that drone from the Greddy Evolution exhaust that zones you out. LOL I just turn the radio up.

I'm stupefied. How da f... grrrrr... Enjoy Enjoy

I've realized instead of driving like I'm about to die in the next hour of old age, I'm a spirited driver. You might as well enjoy the power. I haven't used the cruise control on any of my cars. I'm actually considering purchasing the Smart for work travel..but I'm always surrounded by 18 wheelers..so that's like instant death. The Smart will stick like a bug to the grille.

But 38mpg.. very very very nice.

Good to know. I will be taking a 700 mile round trip for work in a few weeks, and I insisted I drive my car rather than rent one. We get reimbursed for mileage expenses.

^ But we are talking about Highway miles only. When I do 100% city I get around 15, so high 20s is pretty good when you do 50/50.

For some reason when I have more weight (average not too much or too little) I get very good gas mileage. My best is 83 MPH @ 32 MPG. 83 MPH and 70 MPH @ 36 MPG I had over 500 miles for a tank! Amazing

You AVERAGE 30MPG on the highway (multiple fill ups), or is that the best you've gotten? I have a '00 C5 and have gotten 27+MPG on the highway but have never averaged that high. Of course the longest trip that I took was from MD to Bowling Green, not all Interstate and some of it was somewhere North of 75mph.

And I agree with you that the only way to get an accurate calculation is starting with a full tank, dividing the miles driven by the gallons needed to fill the tank. 38MPG just seems on the high side to me from the TL.

Are you guys resetting your MID when you go on long HWY trips?
Again this trip had a strong tailwind. The clouds were moving in the same direction maybe a mile slower than I was. I know this because sometimes driving in direct sunlight I would see shadow 50 ft up the road but would not make it there.

I don't reset my MID because I don't rely on it to calculate my gas mileage. I do that manually.

I have just got back from a 600 mile trip and I averaged 30 mpg for the trip. I have only had the car for a few weeks. Prior to that I have been averaging 21 MPG in mixed driving. I also have been running mid grade fuel. It runs fine and does not ping. I think it's amazing that a car with that much power on tap can get such good mileage.

No complaints so far!
