im lookin for a good set of rear speakers. i believe they are 6x9. i want to leave the stock amp but i want something with bass and thats a quality speaker. any ideas?

 

the sound quality issue with the rear speakers is a result of the low power of the stock amp, the 6x9's in free air, and the crossover/bass boost that is built into the stock amp. replacing the speakers alone will probably be disappointing, especially if you get something with a lower sensitivity then what you're removing...

you might consider:

remove the 6x9's

install a new amp - get the input signal from the rear doors, not the channels for the 6x9's

get a sub

 

need to keep the trunk space as is it not a bass problem that im having the 2 rear speakers are blown and just want something alittle better. not looking to spend crazy money i have another money pit called an s2000 that takes more then enough of that

Those should be pretty interesting... Pull the 6x9's, and check their impedance (or it could be printed on the magnet like mine was). If the factory's are 4 ohm, the Tang Bangs should drop right in. If not, you may have problems.

They look to be a little inefficient, but they should help out with the low end in a pretty significant way...

would be interested to try - what if you put 2 ohm speakers in? would the stock amp be able to handle that? i'm having issues with a 2 ohm door speaker i put in.

 

The amp probably won't be able to play at 2 ohms. It's designed to run at 4 ohms, and that's why all of the speakers are 4 ohm resistances. Seems like you just wasted your money... Should've done your research first...

 

I saw a service manual for a pioneer HU that has the same output power amp IC (PAL006A) as the oem tsx amp. There is a 4 ohm min. There is also a protection circuit in the IC, which probably saved the amp.

My Electrical engineer sister in law validated my suspicion that you can't run 2 ohm speakers on a 4 ohm setup. ugh.

 

You shouldn't go off of 1 source of info... Whenever I'm researching a product, I always check what I read/hear in one place with someone else. This could be why it takes me so long to choose a product, but I've been very happy with my setups thus far.

 

Speakers aren't constant impedance devices. The impedance varies with the frequency of the input signal. Looking at the specifications for the Tang-Band speakers (4 ohms) shows a graph of impedances from 4 ohms to maybe 50 ohms. Usually the manufacturer will state the lowest impedance because that requires the highest current to drive and imposes the highest load on the amplifier.

A "2 ohm" speaker would require twice as much current as "4 ohm" speaker at some frequencies. That's quite a bit more current and as mentioned before the amplifier output circuit will probably limit the current output so it won't burn itself out.

The Tang-Band speaker is interesting for the 1G TSX application if it fits in the rear shelf speaker area without too much modification.

Since you are obviously not looking to blow the rear glass out of your car you can basically use any 4 ohm 6x9. An important consideration is the clearance for the deck lid torsion bars, a lot of 6x9s are too deep to fit in the TSX.

Trying to drive 2 ohm speakers from the factory amp will cause a reduction in performance and possible amp shutdown.
