No not the computer software. But I'd like to know why from my 1997 Accord coupe to my 2005 RL to my 2011 TSX, why doesn't Honda make doors without a metal frame across the door windows at the top? I see the BMWs and Mercs open with a clean door. Does this cost more or a safety issue?

Just random thoughts off the top of my head:

Framed windows probably add more roll over protection so Honda doesn't have to design the roof and roof pillars as strong since the entire door opening is supported roof to door sill. It also adds structure to the doors for side impacts. They could go with frameless windows but then they would have the beef up the door structure to prevent the door from caving into the passenger compartment in a side impact. Usually stronger = heavier + more expensive, both things that are detrimental to fuel economy and sales.

I've also noticed that cars with frameless windows usually have some system that lowers the window a few millimeters when you pull the door handle (Corvette, Eclipse). I think this is to prevent the glass slamming against the seal when closing the door. I think it also aids in door opening by breaking the seal/vacuum when opening the door. More electronic systems = more complication, more risk of those systems failing, more cost.

Years ago, many American cars (particularly GM) were available with both styles. The models with frame-less glass were called hardtops, and those with full frame doors were called sedans. The frame-less glass models were most often available in fancier models (the old Oldsmobile Delta 88's, F-85's, and Cutlass' come to mind). I actually prefer the full frame doors as I think they allow for a quieter ride and provide more support for the window and the whole side of the car. I also assume though that the car is cheaper to engineer with them versus doors with frame-less glass.
