TLX or '14 BMW 328i

Hi there,

I currently own a '09 TSX Tech package. I am looking to replace it with either a I4 TLX or a certified pre-owned BMW 328i. I was at first looking at the CPO '14 Audi A4 but because it will have a new redesign next year, I passed on it. The only frustration about the Bimmer is I can't locate one with Nav, Back up camera, & xenon headlights. The aforementioned options on the 328i is just impossible to find! Hopefully I can find one. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Any reason you're so deadset on a 2014? I didn't know there'd been any major changes to the f30 this year. You should be able to find some nice 2013s coming off 2 year leases over the next 6 months or so. I can understand avoiding the 2012s if you've got first-year bug phobia.

For a rational, long term ownership, the TLX. For a short term fling under warranty, the BMW. I wouldn't even try to own a BMW or Audi once the warranty is up. Unless you enjoy a money pit.

Hi Acvenger, I didn't even think of that. Do the lease ups go into BMW dealership lots?

I would definitely recommend buying only a CPO 328i BMW with the extra warranty if you plan on keeping it for awhile.

If I were you I'd find the lowest mileage 328i M Sport with leather, xenons and nav and have it tuned to ~300hp and ~350+tq. I would take a 328i over a 4 banger TLX anyday, albeit it's more expensive.

As others have said - TLX if you are going to keep it for awhile. I would never own a German marque out of warranty.

Test drive both.

Personally I like the 328i. Redesign looks nice too.

Coming from an Audi I don't have a problem with their reliability, they are how ever expensive to maintain and so are BMW. I don't under stand why the new A4 should deter you from a 1 year car. Audi's don't change appearance enough to matter. So I'll be the contrarian, stick with your TSX and put the money in the bank for your retirement.

Yep. It's usually only a matter of days to turnover a lease turn-in into a CPO car for sale again. I'd recommend it over a TLX 4 cylinder, even if the maintenance does make you twitch sometimes. I think you'll find the powertrain/drivetrain a nice next step from the TSX.

Both are great cars. Depending on how long you want to own it and how tight your budget is. TLX is definitely better long term.

For me, it all depends on the version of the 328i. IMO, unless you get RWD with Sport Line, M-Sport or the Dynamic Handling Package, you aren't getting the superior driving dynamics that could justify the expense and reliability issues of a BMW. So, if it's one of those, go for it. If not, don't bother, because the base and X-drive F30 suspensions are tuned for luxury, and won't provide much if any driving advantage over a TLX.

TLX - somewhat plain homey girl with a pretty face for a long term relationship. Someone you could bring home to your family, but wouldn't impress your friends.
BMW - classy hooker, but you better have your wallet and condoms ready. Wouldn't necessarily want to wake up with in the morning.

The question is what's your need?

The BMW is better to drive and has a better engine. Basically more fun
However the TLX will be better to live with on a day to day basis, and in the long term more affordable in terms of MSRP and maintenance

The TLX I4 is a great update over the TSX, but the 328i definitely offers better driving dynamics/luxurious ride. Pre-owned or new car ? Id go with the new car.

I couldn't agree more I own an 07' 335xi and calling it a money pit is an understatement, I learned my lesson the hard way. I considered getting another BMW, but the more money I pore into it makes me really appreciate my Acura's bulletproof reliability and ease of use. I will be getting a TLX. I could careless about the so called "prestige" that goes with owning a german car its overrated.

How would a Lexus IS350 fare against a BMW 328 or 335i in terms of the overall package? The lexus would be faster then the TLX 2.4 at least. From what I've heard they are pretty reliable. Considering there are a ton of them slightly used on the market maybe it would be worth looking at.
