TL stuck in park gear??????????

My 99 TL is stuck in park? It wont shift out of park? This happened once before a few months ago and I just kept trying and trying and after a few minues it suddenly worked fine. Now no matter what I do it wont shift into any gear?

I took that little plastic insert out right next to the gear grid, and pressed the button down with a pen to be able to use my car but WHAT IS GOING ON????????

probably has to do with the brake light switch that unlocks the shifter when the brakes are applied. do your brake lights work? switch could either be bad or out of adjustment. id suggest doing a search, but im not sure if they fixed that feature yet.

It has NOTHING to do with the bulb, but its usually the brake switch by the brake pedal OR the brake fuse.

I actually had the same problem with my '05 recently; VSA indicator came on as soon as I stepped on the brake locking everything up. Turned out a fuse blew resulting in this problem as well as no brake lights horn. So, check the fuses...

If it is the "brake switch" where do I locate it exactly?

What can I do to remedy the problem?

I dont think it is the same problem. This only happens when the car is in park, cant get out of park. Like I said I over-rid this being the clever person I am and the car works fine until I put it in park and got to rig it again.

Yup. I had to do the same thing; taking the plastic clip out to bypass the brake/shift interlock to get it out of park. In my situation, it was a fuse which the dealer replaced clearing up the problem along with the brake lights and the horn. But maybe the'99's are different.

Did you replace the bulb so all the lights are working-
Once thats done- have a friend watch for all the brake lights to work.
In no lights- thats the dead brake light switch
Recently a ziners was just loose somehow, big feet?? tightened and was ok!
Check down directly behind the brake pedal
There is the unit- cant miss it, only thing the brake pedal hits as soon as you push the brakes

Its the Nuetral Safety Switch you are overriding with the pushing next to the shifter- its supposed to prevent driving off with no brake lights, AND it prevents starting if it thinks the trans is in gear.
Are you fully in Park?
Has the trans been acting up in any other ways recently?

The brake bulbs are 5 bucks a pair- replace all of them to be safe and have even brightness- check the center brake light as well-
that one will mess with you on bulb failure light

It is right by the brake pedal. Get your head down there and push the brake pedal. There is a little metal cylinder looking (almost looks like a little cartridge for a paintball gun) thing that has a switch that is pushed in when you aren't pushing the pedal and when you push the pedal down, it deactivates the switch, turning your brake lights on.

How much is just a brake switch part cost?

How much for the part & the labor?

Our thoughts on how to fix it are the answers we gave you. Its a semi common problem that takes all of 15 min to change yourself. You unplug, then unscrew the old, screw in the new plug it in. Its like 30 bucks or less at the dealer.

Changing the bulb has NOTHING to do with it but you should change it any way just to have all your bulbs in working condition.

i had this problem with my 03 tl. Whenever it was very hot out i noticed my car wouldn't shift out of park so i checked everything but couldn't find anything wrong. I took it to the dealer and it turned out that when it was hot out a fuse would come loose and prevent me from shifting out of park.(this is what he told me) the dealer replaced the fuse for like 10 dollars and i was on my way. It took them about 5 hours and two visits to figure it out though.

so check the fuses

I have a '96 2.5TL. Same thing; no brake lights and have to manually insert key aside shifter to get it out of park, then start it in neutral. Yesterday I unfastened the bolt to the neutral safety switch (some call it a "brake switch") located near the brake pedal, put it back together and it worked, but now only intermittently. I can get it to work by pumping the brakes a few times and holding the pedal down until it shifts out of park. I usually have to repeat the attempt a few times before its accepted. I suspect the sensor is out of alignment and will work on it again tonight. Its the only car I have and its very uncomfortable driving 40 miles of freeway in LA without brake lights.

its not a neutral safety switch. It has nothing to do with neutral. It IS a brake switch. It is what tells the car that the brakes are being applied to light up the brake lights and tell the car that the brake is depressed to get it out of gear.

Thanks babeehlisa and almost4043. I took out both the STOP fuse and the ACC Relay fuse and they were both fine, so I put them back.

Then for the hell of it, I turned on the car and attempted to shift out of park into drive and IT WORKED!

I did it several times, and even turned the car off and on again a couple of times and tried it each time I turned it back on and it STILL worked!

So I am good to go at the cost of $0 and a few minutes of my time. Thanks again!

find out why it blew a fuse! there is a problem somewhere that needs immediate attention
Once the car is in gear- you could be driving with no brake lights
Who hasn't come up on the car with no taillight-no brake lights at all- not even the middle one,,and they are stOPPPPPPPING!
don't let it be you with no lights~

also see owner book section on using the override switch on the right side of shifter
free download at Acura Owners Site | Exclusive Knowledge, Service, & Benefits

and congrats on use of search to find the info you needed, better an old thread than a new one in most cases

This just started happening to my car this morning, but a little different.

It wont budge out of park if I depress the brake pedal fully (like you normally would). Instead I have to slowly depress the brake until I feel the click in the shifter. Do you think the fuse or switch is having the problem or would it just be completely stuck if it were one of those?

Sounds likely it is still the brake switch- possibly it is sticking

try some contact cleaner inside the switch as a temp fix until you can get the switch.

Where is the brake switch located? Under the brake pedal?

this exact problem happened with my 2002 a few months back, i took WD40 and sprayed the hell out of that brake switch on the brake pedal and it's been fine ever since.

it happened during winter so switch was probably clogged from salt/debris/snow
